Is it just me or is anyone else already getting annoyed with the persistent repetition of the phrase 'happy new year'? Sorry, that should be written 'happy new year!' and not 'happy new year' since it always has an exclamation mark after it.

I know we're only two days into it but I've had enough already! About seven people have said it to me this morning. Yes, yes, we know it's a new year NOW SHUT UP ABOUT IT!!

Yes, I am intolerent and misanthropic.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! \o/

Come on, you didnt really expect to post a thread like this and not get the obvious reply? :D

I stopped saying it when I realised I said it to everyone.

Getting my phone ringing from a family friend at half eleven at night, new years day after a messy party was not at all welcome. Especially as all that was said was "Happy new year!".

!!

It is indeed irritating. Especially when you get into work and have to do the obligatory rounds of politeness as people drift in over a half hour period.

If people want to wish me a happy new year then who am I to discourage them. I'm pleased that people want to tell me that they hope I have a good year and am happy to tell them the same - it's one way of showing we care about our fellow human beings.

I probably won't get home to Shetland until March or April but I will be greeted with "Happy new year" by many people as it will be the first time I have seen them this year.

I guess politeness and courtesy are less important in some parts of the country :)

Interesting comment... are such things really a way of showing that we care or just "the right things to say" at the time. I'm pretty sure that if anyone I have siad it to in passing (acquaintances at work for example) did have a bad year, I would be the last to hear about it and probably not really be too bothered to be completely honest. Sad, but true.

I get sick of it, and i know at the weekend, you'll bump into someone you've not seen since new years eve and they will say it to you, like you didn't know it's 2008...

*What??? It's 2008 already? where did 2007 go???*

This is more or less the point. It's just going through the motions - if anything it shows they care less. Most people say it with such insincerity that it highlights how they couldn't give a monkey's whether I have a happy new year or not.

I always say it to people whom I'm meeting for the first time in the new year, unless it's something daft like August or I don't see them regularly.

It's the Chinese new year on February the 7th (4706). I'm going to stay in the party mood til after then :D
