The renewal quote to insure me as a named driver on our family car (1.4 Golf) is £1180!!

Bell will insure me as the policy holder driver, and with the Drive Other Car (Third Party) option for exactly the same price. This includes my parents as named drivers.

The thing is my dad appreciates what Bell are offering but is reluctant to use a 'mickey mouse' company he has heard nothing about. Does anybody here have anything to say about them? Also, If I were to buy my own car in the future (say 6 months) would they let me change the car on the policy without it canceling the half year NCB I would have earned up to that point?

Finally, does the DOC option literally let you drive whatever you want, or do you have to declare in advance the details of the car you'd be driving?

Cheers

Bell is part of the Admiral Group, which means not only can we offer great value for money; we also have the support to provide you with an excellent service.

That's from their about us page.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Admiral_Group

And Admiral Group are huge (operating Diamond, elephant, confused.com etc) so that's the line I would take to convince my parents that they are fine.

Tell him that insurance has moved on from just being Standard Life vs Direct Line and now it is loads of small companies selling the same insurance from a handful of underwriters.

(PS If the last part isn't true then I would still say it ;))

mickey mouse company because your dad hasn't heard of them.. ook, we'll leave that one alone..

DOC you can drive any other car with the owners consent, as long as that car has a valid policy on it. so you can't drive ANY car, only a car that is covered by someone elses insurance.

im with bell as my first insurer, they were very friendly on the phone and were cheapest by far!

Don't really have anything else to say about them.

I'm with Elephant, the wording of DOC is something like 'a car not owned by you or not hired to you under a hire-purchase agreement', so anything really. They didn't have a problem last year when I changed car from group 7 to group 17, the cost to change was reasonable and they were cheapest at renewal in November. Admin stuff is fine too with adding business cover, sending documents etc. and it's always been a UK call centre (Cardiff I think) :).

Excellent. Yeah my dad is very like that, if he hasn't heard of a company he is reluctant to use them, but he did agree with my statement that all insurance companies are crap anyway! I still think that is an outrageous price for a 1.4 Golf.

I was looking at Bell when I renewed my insurance, the thing that stopped me is that you have to declare factory options and they charge extra for them

I dont think I had to with the flexibell policy I just put in the number plate and then theres a box for modifications not factory fitted. The only odd thing about the policy is the third party claim excess on top of the normal excess.

By family car are you saying at least 3 people are insured on it, and your parent is the main driver?

Unlike some companies, Admiral, Churchill etc do not reduce the cost of premiums for having more experienced drivers on a policy and usually just add 100-400 depending on the drivers experience. Also, you only accumulate no-claims as a main driver, not named unless otherwise stated by the company (and I'd double check that with them too).

No, the policy would be in my name and I would be the main driver. Adding my parents as the two named drivers reduces the premium dramatically.

It's just like my cousin's boyfriend has a Focus ST, and he said that adding my cousin as a named driver reduced his premium substantially. The same case with my dad's car when adding my mum too.

I'm with bell. Remember to phone up and cancel/negotiate otherwise they'll automatically insure you at the renewal price.

Ignore the renewal price it's over inflated. Phone up and get a new quote.

Oh and yes bell do decrease the premium for adding experienced drivers on.

That's not true.

Where does it say that in the policy documentation?

i'll let you know when it comes through..

BUT for a car to be legally on the road, it must have a valid insurance certificate.. which kinda implies what i've just said.

unless you wanna start getting into the fact that the car can be driven, but then you must park it off the road if you get out of it, bla bla bla.

Funnily enough posted this yesterday:
