Anyone see this last night on e4? bascally Gorman's plan was to buy a car and drive the classic 3,000 miles from Los Angeles to New York City. There is no other plan, except for while he's doing that, he's not going to give any money to 'The Man' – the multinationals, the chains, the brands, the trademarks.

No where near as good as googlewhack but still worthy of a watch

I really enjoyed it, but then I love Dave Gorman. I agree, Googlewhack was better, but I really felt his pain in that.

It does rather make you want to travel across the US - some really beautiful scenery there.

I was going to start a thread about this last night but I thought it'd just be moved to Music & Box Office and I almost never post there. I thought it was really good, some moments that put a grin on my face and some that were pretty depressing but overall it gives you an idea of how horribly un-local the economy is (and not just in America either).

Gorman is awesome.

i know its out on DVD today. worthy of a watch but like i say not worth going out to buy unlike googlewhack

I don't think he'd having any problems finding 'Mom & Pop' food and hotels in the UK, but I can't remember the last time I saw an independent petrol station over here.

I agree that it makes me want to drive across America myself. Some of the scenary looked spectacular.

$9000 for 2 months travelling across the USA for two people?

That's not bad tbh, and could have been done a lot cheaper if he'd have just gone West --> East. Might be something I'll look into doing. :o

Yup many years back my cousin and I discussed doing this.

Trouble is now hes 45 has no kids and spends a fair bit of his working time in the US, will probably retire at 50 or 55 to spend his sloot.

Whereas im 42 I have a son, adodgy job prospects and wil probably slave away till in 65+.

Not given up hope yet though.

Me and a friend are doing this in the summer

Start in New York end up in Vegas, 21 day trip altogether, comes in at 2 grand each (not including spending money obviously)

Can't wait :)

would have been a lot cheaper if the car did not keep breaking down.

are you buying a car as well? the gf and I were discussing this last night and we couldn't agree what we'd do it in.

You rent a car with that price (little low power thing, pretty naff and not the sort you'd want to do it in), but we're going to spend a few hundred extra while we're out there and rent a soft top car, maybe a classic cadillac or something. Do it properly :p

my only concern with getting something like that would be their fuel consumption - I imagine them to be quite thirsty considering the station wagon they had was doing 18mpg. If I was going to do it, I reckon I'd quite like to do it in my 5, but I love driving that thing whatever the circumstance!

dave gorman is a legend
my friend nearly changed his name t dave gorman via deed poll for that program he did where he was going to find every dave gorman in the world

3000 miles at even 15mpg is 200 gallons, which is what... $600-$800 US depending on where you fuel up and what grade you buy. Not that much to be honest. Quote on a Chrysler Sebring convertible for 4 weeks, pick up in LA, drop-off in New York with unlimited mileage came to £670.

Who cares when fuel is as cheap as it is there!

No sense in chucking money away when it could be spent on something else. My car can do twice the mpg as that, which would give me a pretty decent lump of extra cash to spend on doing stuff out there

Also remember that a UK gallon is about a quarter larger than a US gallon (3.79 litres versus 4.55 litres)
