Ok... it's £4k loan time... new car is on the horizon...

Ok it's now basically between a CLio 182 and a facelift Cupra... i'd be willing to spend a bit more (5k loan + 1k savings) to get one of these.

Don't like the looks i'm afraid and would much prefer the Leon, it's not on the list.

Clio 182 will be 6k+, 6.5k is where decent ones tend to start at I think (going on what a chap on here has just paid for one).

Hmm, also considering the MG ZS 180... gets very good reviews in the motoring press with its' 2.5L V6 engine. I guess mpg may be a lot lower than the CLio though. WHat do you guys think of them? http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...e=RH19+3RL&radius=100&showMoreOptions=&page=2

Reckon a Clio 182 is my safest bet?

Really like my Clio 172, made some good impressions so far. However I always found myself liking the CTR more so if you want a ph2 172 cheap let me know :D

It does handle well, really well infact and even better now it has some F1's on it. They vary in speed too, I think i've got a decent one as I generally have the edge on a CTR.

Good equipment too, auto xenons, wipers, auto climate etc..

Definately drive one though.

As for the comments on the GT4, my mate just bought one in replacement of his EK9 and I must say I was quite impressed when I was in in, feels good when his foot is down ;) Dated interior though..

Someone give me some opinions on the MG ZS 180 please! :D

Depends how cheap 'cheap' was. :p

Ok well an update despite the lack of interest. :p

Going to look at a 2004 Clio 182 in black with both trophy packs tommorrow. Only done 34k miles and looks in immaculat condition. All at a very reasonably advertised £6000... can probably knock him down a bit too. Looking forward to it. :)

The prices on 182's seem to have dropped a fair bit in recent months. If its in good condition and you can get it for less that £6K you've got a real bargain. Thats pretty much an identical car to what i have :)

Be aware that it will need an aux belt change at 36K miles which will set you back £300 ish. You can maybe use that as a bargaining tool.

Oh and make sure during the test drive you take it on a road that you can get above 5,000 rpm in 3rd gear :D :) :D

Just got back in the house... been out on the road car-hunting all day. :D

Step-by step saga breakdown:

----------------------------

Phase 1

Turns out the original Clio 182 I was going to look at http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...del=CLIO&min_pr=6000&max_pr=7000&max_mileage= that seemed almost cheap was in fact a Cat D write-off... thank God for online HPI checks eh?

----------------------------

Phase 2

So after that revelation I then went to see another one near Lakeside in Essex advertised for £7'000 only to get there and find out that the 40k miles it was advertised at was in fact close to 80k and had been mis-advertised. Not only that, but the thick ****er of a salesman who looked about 15 had the cheek to say "Ok no worries mate, bye" after explaining that i'd driven 60 miles to see this car based on that advert. No apology, no courtesy, complete set of gimps, very "barry boy" sort of place too. That was this one here http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...del=CLIO&min_pr=6000&max_pr=7000&max_mileage=

----------------------------

Phase 3

Anyway the final car I went to see after the above turned out to be this beauty here, which was being sold at an official Renault dealers for £6'995 with a low 33k mileage and both cup options (though that's not stated in the advert) http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...del=CLIO&min_pr=6000&max_pr=7000&max_mileage=

To be honest as soon as I saw it I fell in love with the thing. The car was in fabulous condition, only a few minor chips to the paint, very minor kerbing to one alloy, and a chip in the windscreen, which i'll get on to in a minute.

Anyway after sitting inside and having a fiddle I was then given the keys and was able to take it out for a test spin. Now, bearing mind I not only had the dealer, but also my dad in the back I was still seriously impressed with how the car handled and more importantly the acceleration, I couldn't stop grinning, God knows what it'll be like when i've no lardy blokes filling it and it's just me in there, can't wait! It feels so light and nimble and the seating position is very, very comfortable. I'm also very chuffed with the sheer amount of kit it has too, makes my Vectra look like a flintstones mobile! Also there were no rattles and everything felt solid.

Anyway after the test drive we got back and I had already decidded I wanted it, so then we sorted out the financials. It was as I suspected really... not much budging on price. I ended up paying £6'995 with a full years tax thrown in (£210), 3 months full parts & labour warranty (can be extended to 12 months for £295, don't think I will though). It will also be given a full service before I get it... the alloys will be refurbed, the bodywork will be gone over to get rid of any chips in the paintwork, and the windscreen will of course be fixed, and if it's too deep a chip completely replaced.

I'd have liked to knock them down a bit further but they weren't budging and to be honest I can see why... apparently while i'd been looking at it and taking it for a spin about 5 people had called about it wanting to see it. In fact I actually nabbed it off of another guy who was supposed to be buying it but his finance was being refused by the credit companies... the dealers saw this as a bad sign and put it back on the market (just before I rang asking if it was still available) only for him to ring the dealership after i'd agreed to take it saying that his dad had agreed to finance the car and if it was available he'd have it. Tough **** tbh.;) So i'm sure they would have had no lack of potential buyers so no reason to be too trigger-happy with the deals.

All in all after doing some research into the Clio 182 market in terms of pricing I think I got solid deal, and that the dealers weren't being greedy with the price... I honestly think they could have charged another few hundred quid with ease, especially if they'd serviced the car and refurbed the alloy before putting it on show. Maybe it wasn't the bargain of the century, but I know that it's in fantastic condition, wasn't ragged to hell before I got it (older lady owners who didn't do much mileage), and that when it leaves the dealers it's going to look as good as new due to them going over it all with a fine toothcomb. The full years tax doesn't hurt either, and i'll get them to stick a full tank in for me as well when I collect it.

So I go to pick it up next saturday, and all I have to do now is sort out my finance, insurance, and sell my old vectra for hopefully around £800 or so. I'm over the moon, and really can't wait to drive it. I have what I want now... a small hot-hatch that offers performance and character by the bucketload. Win!. :D

sounds a cracking deal you haggled for youself tho,

years tax 3 month warranty windscreen and bodywork done along with a service,

not bad on a car the dealer knows he can shift no problem

hope you enjoy her :)

yeah watch the insurance, we got raped going from a A4 diesel to a LCR

but bet you cant wait all excited and counting down the dayS?

So excited I keep doing little sex-wees all over the place. :D

Regarding the insurance guys... i'm 27 with 2 years NCB and i've been quoted at £646 fully comp with a £250 excess... it's what I paid for my Vectra SRi last year, and 3 points on my license doesn't really help. It's a pain that my current insurers Swiftcover are unable to quote me though, changing is an inconvenience. :(

EDIT - By thew ay do you think it's worth going for the extr9 months warranty for the extra £295?

yep grab the warranty with both sweaty palms, give you that piece of mind :)

seriously even if one minor thing goes wrong then the warranty has paid for itself.

as for the insurance we were with swiftcover and went to the LCR and they didnt touch us either(26 and 27 here for me and Mrs) ended up going from 197 FC for the A4 to 597 for the LCR FC with admiral

Yup I'd take the warranty, for piece of mind, esp if it's main dealer.

Also remember the timing belt of these needs doing at 5 years (or 72k) and it's not a cheap job! So if it's a 2004 car you've got a bit of time to prepare, expect to pay £500 for a specialist to do the belt change + major service, and a lot more for Renault to do it.

Sky insurance quoted nearly £200 less for me then any other insurer, including Adrian Flux, Chris Knot, Admiral, Tesco and another couple I rung up for.

Hmm so with the 12-month warranty the final price would be £7'290. Do you think that's decent overall guys given the age of the car and it's low mileage/unmolested condition? Hell maybe it's not an uber-deal, but I feel very very comfortable knowing it's from a main dealership and there will be no nasty surprises in store for me. :)

Was it a 2004 (the linky wasn't working for me)? Seems a decent enough price as it's a main stealer rather than private sale. Have a look on the for sale ads on Cliosport to compare.

Seems like a good price, seen a few on Cliosport sold in the last couple of months for £7800-£8750, same spec and sometimes higher mileage! http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=297397&highlight=182

Oh and yes was a 2004, they've taken the car off of AT already. :)

If you are after a very capable hot hatch, the Clio 1*2 range is superb.

Congrats.

A totally different car to the likes of the LCR etc but incredible fun to hoon around in.

I'd love a 172 cup or a 182 FF with cup packs but the insurance prices are ridiculous until i'm 20.

Luckily for you, I can't see that being a problem;):D
