22” 1680 x 1050 or 24” 1920 x 1200 monitor?

Quick question guys

I have put together a new quad core with 8800GTS, 4gig ram, Raptor 150 on Vista 64 bit and its running on a cheap Dell monitor at present.

Question is, I want to run Crysis and some other games on it and get the best performance (from the game) so should I go for a 22” 1680 x 1050 or 24” 1920 x 1200 monitor? Or is it worth getting the higher resolution and backing down the display settings in the game?

Sorry for the sad question but I hav'nt messed with PC gaming that much over the years, only run BF2 and COD now and then!

I have about £300 to spend; full Spec of PC is in my sig.

I'm sure you'll be fine at 1920x1200 if you're not worried about anti aliasing too much. I'd say the 22" is more suited to your card. Gaming at 1680 on a 1920 monitor looks ok to me. Up to you really.

Other option is get the GTS and if it's not enough buy another and SLI them in a few months :P

Select no scaling in your driver and play at either of those resolutions pin sharp. you'll still get around "21.5 Inches of screen space on a 24 incher anyway @ 1680 * 1050.

its strange how few people knoww about this feature.

alternatively buy a monitor with 1:1 pixel mapping.

oooh not heard anything about 1:1 pixel mapping! So does that mean you can reduce the res of a LCD without losing image quality?

If so I am sold!

personally, i would look at it as which is the long term investment. imo its going to be the monitor, your probably going to stick with a decent monitor for 5 years maybe more but you might upgrade your graphics card in 1-2 years time. therefore, if you cant get full 1920 atm, a future upgrade might allow it. myself, i'd be going for the full hd 24" =D

Thanks for your comments guy's, I should have mentioned that I already have a second PC with an Ultrasharp 2408WFP. The new PC I've built will be mainly for running Vista 64 bit and some games, I haven’t really the cash to go for another 2408WFP so was looking at some of the cheaper 24’s” or a good quality 22” .

I was looking at the HP w2207h today and it has a really nice finish, just like you get with the glass effect Dell XPS laptops.

Has anyone used or got one of the HP w2207 or the HP 2408h monitors?

I was hoping to mount the new monitor on the following as well;

QUOTE From HP w2408h 'Vivid Color' 24in Monitor

The option Custom Scaling presents you with the option for One to One pixel mapping, so you can get the correct aspect ratio from games and movies when you plug in something such as a PS3 or Xbox 360.

I take it this is the option you are talking about Superficial?

Xray

thats it - if your budget stretches to a 1:1 then get that however unless you are going to play consoles on the monitor you dont stricly need it as the driver will take care of it
