The Budget - Band G Tax £1000!

Signed, the new VED is a great idea for new cars but terrible for old cars. I'm not about to throw away my 330i sport just because Captain Darling (blackadder 4 reference) wants to make it slightly more expensive to own it.

Well that sucks :(

I Just called the DVLA to enquire about my Estima. It's a 2000, but is being charged by Co2. They said that because it was REGISTERED in this country after 2006, it gets taxed by Co2 because there is an offcial Co2 figure for it.

So just because a car is older than 2001 it's not a given that it will be taxed by the old system. If it was registered over here after 2006 and an official Co2 figure exists for the car, then it will be taxed by emissions, irrespective of wether it was manufactured prior to 2001.

So basically, if the car has a Co2 figure on the V5c, then it will be taxed on emissions, even if it was munufactured prior to 2001.

So, 400 quid a year then on my Estima

Another way around this if you want a 335i or something, buy an Alpina :D

They have no official CO2 figure so are charged by engine size, so the B3 Bi-Turbo is a faster 335i but with £200/year tax rather than £400 :D

How about road tax actually goes to repairing the roads? EVERY road around here has huge pot holes and is so warped its a constant struggle to keep my car going in a straight line.

Or better yet, scrap road tax and put the extra on fuel so 10,000 miles @ 30mpg = £250 extra

Don't make me laugh, one of the first things Labour did when they came to power was cancel all the road building and improvement plans.

Now 10 years on and with a truly horrendous public transport system they realise they have real problems.

With no way of raising the cash to improve the roads they have taken a stance of trying to price us off them. Only problem is the national transport system can't cope with the current commuters let alone if more of us abandon the car.

They have backed themselves into a corner.
