Largest 15,000rpm drive to date

Although we've become acustomed to larger and larger hard drives in consumer PCs, with the Terrabyte barrier broken some time ago, enterprise hard drives are still trailing behind. Part of the reason for this is that many high-speed enterprise drives use 2.5in platters instead of 3.5in platters, even though they're 3.5in drives.

The main reason for this is that 15,000rpm hard drives produce a lot of heat and as such needs better cooling than your average desktop hard drive and most of these drives have heatsinks built into the casing. More importantly, the drives need to allow for super fast data access and as such a smaller diameter of the disc means less head travel which speeds up data access.

Enough technology lesson already, the latest 15,000rpm hard drive from Hitachi - the Ultrastar 15K450 - packs no less than 450GB onto four platters. Add 16MB cache, an average latency of 2ms, and a seek time of 3.6ms and you've got a scotchingly fast drive.

Interface wise the Ultrastar 15K450 is available with either SAS connectivity or FibreChannel interface. This drive is guaranteed for 24/7 uptime and is meant to be used in mission critical systems.

Will this need a raid card ? or how you call them ? fast and a lot of space hopefully not loud

It's a SAS drive so it needs a SAS controller card.

Quiet? Not a chance, it's an enterprise drive so performance and reliability come far higher up the list of priorities than silence.

Not sure where the article gets the largest 15krpm to date claim from though, Seagate announced the 450Gb Cheetah 15K6 months ago.

well mine my raptor x is on below 30 c

this isnt a raptor though. The Raptor X is aimed at the enthusiast market, and thus comes with an SATA connector like you'll find on just about every new motherboard these days

the Drive you mentioned is designed for big rack servers, with massive air conditionning systems and a locked door, where people dont care about noise or heat levels.

For a start you'll need one of these

a SAS Controller card to get the necessary SAS connectors. Then you'll need SAS cables.

and thats before we get onto the noise etc..

Notice the fibrechannel bit ? these drives arent meant for your PC. You need your head examming if you think these arent much different from the consumer orientated hard drives found in desktop PCs.

oh and thats before we've mentioned price btw

300gb SAS drives are £350 +

so this 450gb model could easily be £500 + considering its going to have a premium for being the fastest available model.

Nothing to LOL about, 2x 16MB Raptors in Raid 0 will be faster for sustained MB/Sec than the 15k HDD.

I dont think any single drive other than the best of the best SSD's do 120MB/Sec
