Record Profits for Nintendo

Eurogamer had the profit at $2.5B, not $5B, still not bad!

Hmm, yeah I see their story says 257 billion yen profit ($2.5B), over at n-europe.com where I got the news it says 487 billion yen profit ($5B). Both show the same sales value though of 1670 billion yen.

I'll hunt around to see if any other major sites can confirm which it is!

Edit: Gamespot also confirms it at $2.5 Billion! Still, amazing!

For some people it was getting a bit stale. Consoles went from the NES to Snes/Mega drive and then into 3D. So now we are on our 3rd "playstation" generation playing the same games the same way we did 10 years ago- GT5 for example. Great game, but most people miss out on a huge % of the fun by using a stick instead of a racing wheel/pedals. The way we interact with games is a huge part of the enjoyment- just look what the analog stick did for 3D games or even "2D" sport games.

I agree with this... the 360 & PS3 have both primarily brought us better graphics but not much else.

The other benefits that recent technological advances have enabled Microsoft and Sony to include in their consoles are overlooked by most gamers. I can't imagine the average XBoxers or PS3'ers noticing that the CPU can handle more instructions per second, or that the consoles can use more complicated AI routines than ever before, or that the audio capabilities of this-gen consoles exceed last-gen's, etc... To them, the games are the same as they ever were but they're prettier now - the 360 and the PS3 bring Hi-Def graphics to the world of video games, that's all.

The innovative stuff all happened in the past, e.g. the advent of 3D-gaming was during the N64 era, the widespread introduction of online gaming happened with the DC (but really took off with the XBox), realistic games, as opposed to cartoon type offerings, came about with the PSX, etc... What innovations, apart from Hi-Def graphics, have the PS3 or 360 really brought to the table? Blu-Ray discs for more content maybe...? I'd hazard a guess that average gamers think this only brings more shiny graphics and allows them to watch BD films on their Hi-Def tellies.

Don't get me wrong - I do like the 360 and PS3. But neither of them are that innovative. They're both evolutionary consoles not revolutionary.

Play GTA IV then say that! It's the next step up for games.

The Godfather was damn fun though with the Wii controls.
agreed, anything to keep sony and ms on their toes
I don't really think they are that bothered, it's not like they are losing any big name games that decide to go Wii only because most the Wii games are either average, made by Nintendo or just mini game packs.

I see the Wii more as a side console to go alongside a 360/PS3, not a primary one as mine just gathered dust after the novelty wore off. (For me)

I'm really not surprised, I knew from the start the Wii was going to be a hit, I remember making this thread back in jul 07,

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17755961

From my opening post,

End of the day I think everyone is gonna be in for a big surprise in regards to Wii sales, this thread might come back and bite me in the bum but I really don't see Wii sales slowing down anytime soon.

I guess I never needed to worry about that post coming back to me and biting me in the bum :D, like nokkenWud said in the opening of that thread "The Wii is the modern day board game" and I agree whole heartedly, I was only saying some-thing similar the other day, the Wii is the next step in evolution for family entertainment, yes the PS3 and 360 are very popular but they are still aimed at niche markets,

The Wii has lost that gaming 'geek' type stigma completely, It's the first console to truly do that tbh and they deserve allot of praise for it, it benefits everyone, computer games as a whole are becoming more a form entertainment than a hobby, Nintendo have played a big part in changing public opinion in this matter, I really wouldn't be surprised if 5/10 years down the line more family's that have a Wii under the TV than there are families that own the Monopoly board game, it just seems a given today that if you have a family then you should have a Wii, and why not tbh.

That's how it is for me, i've had a Wii since launch and must have used it for a total of 20 hours :o

The Wii gets the least played time for me, but that doesn't matter: what matters is that far more people enjoy the Wii more than the other consoles. It's a different experience that appeals to more people. Just the way it is.

I'll have to admit to not having played any GTA games since I signed-up with a company called Freeloader and downloaded GTA on the PC after having to sit through a stupidly large number of adverts.

Serious question as I'm a GTA noob, but what does GTA IV offer that previous versions of GTA didn't?

On the contrary, I've found that the PS3 has brought me back to the roots of gaming, with stuff like Pain, Pixeljunk Monsters and Super Stardust HD, where it's not about graphics, it's not about vastly huge play areas, it's about simple, solid, addictive games that are immense fun to play. I'm sure there are a lot of others out there who've had the same experience playing XBLA on their 360 as well.
This generation of gaming is turning out to be as much about re-discovering the basic joys of gaming, as it is about zillions of polygons on screen at once and Nintendo are in no way the sole instigators of that.
I've been playing for the last 25 years and for me, gaming has literally never been this much fun before.

Why is GTA IV the next step up for games? It dosent look any better than gears of war or a host of other 360/ps3 games.

Because its not about graphics?

GTA4 introduces a level of detail that I've never seen in games, couple this with the superb Euphoria system and it is truely a step forward in gaming. Far more than shaking your hand like an idiot to do something which could be done far more simply with an analogue stick.

GTA4 is identical to the previous games. Nothing new at all tbh =/

It will be a great game but calling it a step forward in the scale you're talking about is, to be frank, idiotic.

I'm disappointed in you tbh.

Thats not true at all! Read some of the previews, sure its the same genre but then level of detail is amazing. Just stuff like being able to call cops on people committing crimes and peds being able to do that to you. Not to mention the entirely new multiplayer modes that have never been done before in this type of game. I think the Euphoria system is a big step forward for gaming, adding the kind of unpredictability that helps replayability. Not to mention that bigger isn't always better. We're getting the technology to be able to make bigger and bigger worlds but GTA4 is trying to make a normal sized world that is just insanely detailed.

It really isn't anything new, the idiots over-hyping it are in for a big disappointment once they calm down and look at it objectively.

agreed, I think the hype monster has gotten so far away from reality with GTA4 that people are going to be upset.

On topic - Nintendo themselves havent turned there back on 'real' games at all. They had zelda at launch, released probably ther finest 'video game' of all time in Mario Galaxy. They also knocked out a Paper mario incarantion, metroid prime, smash bros and mario kart. When these were on GC no one was upset about them making too many casual games.

Its not so much the games they've made, its how difficult they've made it for 3rd party developers to make serious games for it. They have to completely change the controls and completely scale back the graphics/build an entirely new version of the game.

good news for Nintendo but i hope proper gaming does not die out ,as i cannot see my self playing wii type games in the future .

Firstly: Go Nintendo. I have always been a Nintendo fan from NES onwards . Actually I owned nearly all the UK Nintendo consoles and I even had a Power Glove. Then again I was a Sega fan too and had the Master System 3D Specs, but I digress.

Secondly WTF is "proper gaming"? That line always makes my blood boil. GTA IV style gaming is as "proper" as playing Mario Galaxy so "proper" gaming will never die out. Sure there will be more mini-game style games but as you may have noticed the Wii has plenty of "proper" games too.

Get what I am saying or do I have to use more of these ""? ;)

He has got a point Kreeeee, I can see where you're coming from, but to say GTA4 is the same as the others is pretty stupid.

However Bossy papa you are also entirely wrong. While i myself prefer the 'proper' games as you described them. It doesn't mean wii games aren't proper games.
