Roger Williamson Fatal Crash in a GP 1973 race, his friend, David Purley, stops mid race and tries to go to Roger's aid.

So sad.....

oh my word...that is so, so sad. It doesn't seem real, the car looks so small and easy to move that with some help maybe they could have got him out?

Heart breaking to watch.

I think they probably could have with the number of people they had there. However, by the time they had that number of people there he probably had very little chance of survival and its important to note that the only one who was wearing a flame retardant suit, and would have been able to touch the burning wreckage, was the other driver - the other people look like they are wearing business suits.

Very sad...seen it before but never fails to make me feel :(...

There is also another video on youtube, with fatal crashes from motorsport which is also very moving..can't seem to find it anymore though.

From what I remember, the marshals were basically untrained, unequipped, unwilling and unable to be of any real use. Purley on the other hand was highly motivated to try and stop the situation and knew one end of an extinguisher from the other.

Nobody else stopped because most of them didn't see Purley's car parked up and thought Purley was Williamson, if you get me.

Doesn't make it any less awful though :(

That video is bad enough, but if anyone posts the other video with far more graphic deaths they'll earn themselves a holiday.

True, but they could still help tbh. Whats a bit of scarring in exchange for someones life?

Remeber however, this is in the days when Marshals are there to stop people getting onto the track, Safety and medical cars dont exist, and the only piece of equipment a marshall may have is an extinguisher. They dont have any protective clothing either, so trying to push over a car that may explode is incredibly dangerous to themselves.

Driving a motor car carried with it massive risk. Drivers died often. It is unfortunate, but thinkgs like this are what has lead to motor sports being so incredibly safe in this modern time. These guys had incredible guts to climb into those cars, and there poiniering driving pushing the limits has created an enviromnet that is now very safe. My respects go out to them.

amen,

brave brave men,

Yes, it's been posted before and removed.

No offence intended by posting this.

I would not post anything more "graphic", I know the rules here and whats more, I have seen similar scenes in real life in my line of work, for what it's worth.

So I'm not posting to glorify anything for "shock" value, although that should be pretty obvious.

There was a big thread about this crash on another forum.

After the fire was put out, the car was pushed over the barrier and a tarp thrown over it with the driver still in the car. No doctor went to the car to confirm death.

The car and driver were left there until the race was over and most of the spectators had left the circuit. Then a van was sent out to remove the body.

Don’t know how true the story is but more than one person confirmed it.
