Gonna be getting the Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4870 card when it comes in.. but just one question... WHO in the hell are powercolor? never heard of them before? Do i trust this bizare company!? hmmmm?
One note: i know the first round of 4870's will be pretty much ati's stock card with pretty stickers on the fan casing... but even still they called their company powercolor..
thanks gents :D

WHO in the hell are powercolor?

They make ATI graphics cards among other things.

never heard of them before?

It would seem not. But they are a very popular and very big company. Their cards are usually the cheapest to buy. :)

Yes

I doubt any companies will make any cards that differ to the ATI reference design. Some companies will put different coolers on but that is it.

:)

Powercolor is in the scene more than 10 years. What i find strange though is the fact that their 4870's cost so much less than the other cards. Probably their oldered more stock from ATI resulting in lesser prices. Anyway with the price difference someone could get a very nice aftermarket cooler for their card at that price.

My powercolour X800 Pro never missed a beat in about 3 years in various systems, even with pipes unlocked and overclocked. They're one of the better known budget brands.

Yep, I had their X800XL and that was a good card. Still going strong in my sister's (my old) PC. But only 'cus she killed the HIS X1950pro that was in there :(

I had a nightmare with Powercolor's RMA when I had one of their older cards. The person on the other end of the emails I sent to their "UK" RMA department spoke probably the worst English i've ever heard.

Then the correspondance stopped altogether, despite me firing off several emails. If the card was worth more at the time i'd have probably chased it, but I couldn't be bothered. I just left it.

Admittedly it was from another e-tailer, and they were pretty useless about the whole thing as well, instead telling me to go to Powercolor as it was "outside the 12 month warranty period".

It's making me apprehensive about ordering the 4870, but I do trust that if this was to happen again, Gibbo and Yewen would do their best to help out.

I'd be wary of getting a PowerColor card again, after the complete lack of fan control on my 3870...it's on all the time and there's no way of slowing it down without a h/w mod!

I'm a bit disappointed about the lack of fan control on my 3870, although, it was cheaper than any other brand (by quite a bit in some cases.) Although, I have to say, I think that the powercolor had higher clock speeds than any of the other brands as well...I'd definitely buy from them again, especially if they add the fan speed controller.

Not sure how long the warranty is on the powercolor 4870 but I have read that their service is absolutely ****. (But does include a positive outcome thanks to OcUK);)

EDIT: Can't get the link to work but if you search "PowerColor & its not so 2 year Warranty" in google its the first one

Powercolor have been around for a while now. Good cards, no better, no worse than anyone else's and just as reliable.

Agreed although the powercolor HD3850 was better than pretty much all other HD3850 cards.

It came pre overclocked (quite heavily), had an excellent zerotherm cooler on it AND was cheaper than most other brands.
