All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

We were, but to give Chelsea due credit they were about as conistent as you can possibly get the first year they won it. Wouldn't have classed Tiago and Kezman as key players in the side though, certainly Kezman wasn't.

They weren't key players at all:)

50% and 75% of matches kind of indicates they where key players surely?

They may well have been a weakness which you couldnt address with what you had avaialbe, but surely the sheer number of matches they did play (even as subs) make them key players?

Not at all, both being sold soon after is a little clue to this. :p

Key players for that team were Cech, Terry, Lampard, Makalele, Robben, not sure whether Crespo and Drogba would have been key players at the time.

A player could play 100% of the matches and not be a key player. What you bring to the side (that nobody else could) is what makes a key player. The above players all brought a huge amount to that Chelsea side, Tiago and Kezman did not (regardless of how many games they played).

Not really, Kezman for one was rubbish but he was all we had, if anything he was key in us not being even better.
Just playing a fair amount of games doesn't make anyone a key player it's how they perform in those games:)

key players are match winners, not regulars players tbh.
Exactly, number of games played isn't the deciding factor. What FrankJH has done has taken the fact that key players are likely to have played a large number of games, and then assumed that the reverse (large number of games = key player) is also the case.

Aye, Kezman couldn't hit a barn door.

Not sure where to put this but Ronaldo is set to have an ankle operation in the next few days and will miss pre-season apparantly.

United go to South Africa in two weeks, hope we make a signing before then. Wish we'd just test Spurs with an offer for Berbatov, he's the only player I think we need. Got a funny feeling Fergie is going to settle with Rooney, Tevez, Manucho and Campbell though.

Just wondering, did Liverpool even sign that Dossena bloke..? Iv just looked on BBC and hes not on the squad profile

AFAIK he all but signed a while back but was getting married which has meant there has been a delay. Parry confirmed it will be officially completed soon.

Looks like fulham are close to signing Hakin Yakin, Dave Kitson and also interested in a few other players i can remember the name of! They want £5m or something for Simunic too.

Now that Kamara is out for 6+ months, need someone to replace him.

That's the problem, Barry isn't worth £18m. I can only assume O'Neil is asking for it because that's was we paid for Mascherano(24), but the expected fee for Alonso(26) is £15m. I don't rate Barry as highly as ether Mascherano or Alonso so if they won’t accept less than £18 then I'd rather stick with Alonso and leave Villa with a player than no longer wants to play for the club. I think Villa need to get real about his valuation, ManU paid £18m for Carrick last year when he was 25, and he’s abetter player imo, and he came from a bigger club. If Barry was 25-24 maybe he's worth £18m maximum, but not any more.

I agree with absolutely everything you said there

However

If you want the player and that's what Villa want then that's what you'll have to pay

And Saha ;)

I still think he'd sell Saha.

It would seem like a good idea but the question is surely who would want to buy him? As a striker who is frequently injured and when he isn't he is "not in the right mental state" or whatever the phrase is to play.

On behalf of my club I'd like to formally offer £1.46, a bag of Walkers salt & vinegar crisps, 6 paperclips and a couple of elastic bands - that being what I've got sitting about my desk at the moment. The plan is to buy him, ship him off to Lithuania and have him back when he realises that there are far worse things in life than playing professional football for a living. Deal?

not really - surely if you have no other player available for said position, then surely the only person who can play there, whether good or bad, is still key unless you want to play with 10 men!!!

Obviously good players are always key - Im not argueing they arent.
