I had planned a weekend up near Edinburgh for next weekend, with a couple of mates. To my surprise, a mate told me that the fringe festival was on at the same time, (yes I lead a very sheltered life!).

Anyhow, as im up in the area it would be rude not to go the Fringe now! But as I have never been, whats the score, is it worth booking tickets before hand, or is it just worth winging it?

On another note, anyone know of the area near Edinburgh, called Aberdour, it was the only place I could find a Hotel which was reasonably priced.

Really looking forward to the trip now, just hope the weather is ok, believe it or not, its my first break this year:eek:

The fringe is pretty much a festival in its own right these days, so tickets can be expensive and in demand. I'm assuming that there's information on all of the shows here - http://www.edfringe.com/ so have a look and see if anything interests you, then you'd probably be better off booking in advance.

Aberdour is in Fife, about 25 miles from the city centre, it's a town btw, not an area ;). I don't know if you're taking a car or relying on public transport, but it's about 10mins drive from Inverkeithing park and ride, or you can get a train direct to the city centre (Fife circle line for timetables). It's probably about 30 mins either way. I wouldn't recommend driving in to Edinburgh at this time of year, especially as parking is extortionate.

Im driving up, Im only planning to be in Edinburgh for one day, so I dont mind the parking fees.

Do you know if there is a toll charge on the bridge (the name escapes me right now) on the way to Aberdour.

Aberdour is lovely. Its easy to get to edinburgh right to the fringe by train. You will go over the forth bridge on the way

i work in the box office and we are getting quite low and sold out.
i would recomend book in advance but in the past we've had problems with the website, also theres the halfprice hut (only tickets liste don the board are half price and for the same day only) if u totally want to wing it.

The bridge in question is the Forth Road Bridge - tolls have now been abolished now though :)

Aberdour is two minutes along the road from my house - it is a lovely little village :)

As for parking I'd suggest the Omni Centre, it's next to the Playhouse at the far end of Princess Street. It's a large / safe car park which i've always found very reasonably priced considering its location.

Aye, will need to get along to some things. Or maybe just watch the street acts as they are always good for a laugh :D

I have to say I prefer Edinburgh without the Festival on, but then I love Edinburgh for the Architecture and the History. Glad i'm not there this year, i can imagine Princes Street is a nightmare with the tram works and festival!

I've just come back from it and saw quite a few good shows.

I recommend:

New Arts Club Extra Ordinary World (at the Gilded Balloon) - Its an eccentric pair that do comedy with dance. We were slightly sceptical but it was really good.

Liam Mullone: In a Dead Man's Hat (Gilded Balloon again) - Some guys story of being stuck in Vegas, I liked it a lot.

Jim Rose Circus (Big purple cow at the underbelly) - Anyone whose heard of this guy will now what this show will be like, if not then put "Jim Rose Circus" into youtube. The show is called Stairway to Hell and is about a band trying to get into hell after going to heaven. It is brilliant and much more extreme than the youtube material. Very adult but no way sexual unless you are demented. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! In my opinion its the best thing there.

I saw more but these were the best I saw, the gilded balloon is by the big inflatable purple cow. You can't miss it. If 1 person goes to the Jim Rose Circus because of this post I'll be happy, I was recommended it by someone in my hostel and don't regret it one bit.

Hope you don't get the blue condom :)

You can't be very far from where I grew up, which was also about 2 mins from Aberdour (possibly the same town, but I don't really admit to having lived there any more ;)).

The Omni car park is horrible, possibly one of the worst laid out car parks in the city centre! It and the St James centre are the cheapest places to park though if you have to be in town.

Theres quite a few shows at the guilded balloon and Underbelly that i want to go and see actually.Im just gonna wing tbh.

Cheers for all the advice.

My nephew has a show at the underbelly. Also I must point out that I found some eating places incredibly expensive. We took my nephew and his acting partner to a place called The Dome where the steak was £28.00 a go!
