What do cleaners demand in your area?

Here in west berkshire my cleaner has today announced that her rates will be rising to £10/hour. I feel this is expensive, and have told her that i will have to get back to her at that rate.

Over-reaction? We are talking a raise from £6/hour currently.

I say fair play to her, 6 quid is just above minimum wage. to clean up your mess. 6 to 10 is quite a hike, but 6 quid is sod all

My mother does a little cleaning as part time work when my younger sisters are at school. Located in the Scottish Borders her rates depend on client but vary between £10-20 per hour.

Last one was £8 per hour, current one is £9 or £9.50 I think.

That's a pretty big hike you're talking about there, though. £6 to £10 is a dramatic increase.

I wouldn't expect to pay less than £15/hour for anyone doing tiring physical work. Whether it's a cleaner, gardener, window cleaner or similar job.

Ok this is weird, I was about to make almost exactly the same thread.

My cleaner in West Berkshire charges £11/hour. That's based on 2 hours a week to clean a small 2 bedroom (extended) cottage.

She has her own key and lets herself in while I'm at the office. I then come home to a nice-smelling, sparkly house. She even empties the bins.

It sounds expensive but it's worth every penny IMO if you value your time at more than £11/hour. Not to mention the fact she gets more done in 2 hours than I could if I spent an entire day.

This is where the value lies for me, i cant put an equivalent value on the time if i were to do it, in order to do the same as she does in the 3 hours per week she is here, i would have to devote an entire gruelling saturday to it. So even at £10/hour it effectively equates to me spending an entire free day (which i dont have) for around £30 :p

However, it doesnt change the point that 6-10 is a large increase, i appreciate that in these hard times rates have to rise, i'd even be willing to shift up to £7, which is over 4* inflation. But £10 is a hell of a raise.

Having said this, it looks as though i was underpaying before, and that £10 is perhaps more on the mark.

I pay myself with cider and wine after a few hours work cleaning up my own crap :)

i'm very cheap you know :)

£10ph isn't all that much to be honest, whilst the hike from £6ph to £10ph is the overall amount really isn't much compared to prices I've seen charged.

My mother used to get charged something like £10ph for a small cottage about 2-3 years ago, which she decided was not on due to the person taking about 4-5 hours and doing a very poor job of it, resulting in her having to go over the place again anyway.

EDIT: This was in a holiday cottage that my mother runs, not in our house...so it had to be cleaner than clean. :)

Jez, I'm sure she was undercharging. I know it's cash in hand but £6/hour is awful.

I'd agree to the price rise but I'd point out anything you're unhappy with and make sure she knows you expect an impeccable service to justify the extra cost.

Edit: I don't think it's "middle class" at all. I work extremely hard at what I'm good at. I'm not good at cleaning - Sam (the cleaner) is. She gets paid for what she does well, I get paid for what I do well. It's an efficient use of resources.
