Hi, my mate is looking for a new motor. He is searching for a Golf V6 but he seems to be basing his decision on their looks as opposed to how good the car actually is. Tried to explain something like an MX5 or a civic might be just as much, if not more fun for less money. He is looking at around £5k for one but I am dubious.

No point mate. Some people are a law unto themselves with it comes to Golfs. If he wants to buy a Golf, let him buy a Golf.

One of my best mates (who isn't that clued up or particularly interested in cars), traded in his 04 Leon recently for a 14,000 mile 2008 Golf 1.9 TDi with 110bhp which cost him £12,000. His reasoning was that the Golf was well built, reliable, good for economy whereas the Leon needed new wishbones or some other suspension components.

I kid you not.....

MX5 = You've got to be female to drive one without looking gay.
Civic = BORING BORING BORING, not to mention the new ones look gash
R32 = Nice car, fast and good to mod. Not to mention, a fairly rare spec of golf.

Tell your mate to completely ignore you and buy a golf.

That mx5 looks gash, the front end looks horrible.

Or ignore you, because an R32 is out of his budget

I think pitchfork is some sort of troll, I cant remember the last time he said something that was actually true or useful. If he isnt lying about his M5 he's posting random stuff like that.

So does anybody have any helpful suggestions? He is sat on ebay/autotrader right now sifting through all the rude boy Golfs. Fox you're right, he's looking at 4motion models.

MX5 is a girly car.
Civic is common as pig muck.
How is that trolling? I'm entitled to an opinion am i not? If I think you'd have to be mad to recommend a civic or mx5 over a golf then I'm going to say so aint I. Conversely if i think a mondy is a good cheap runabout i'll agree.
Why so serious anyway fox, people need to lighten up on this forum, take the stick out of their backside and realise things don't have to be proper and perfect with lashings of ginger beer.

You would never convince me to get a mx5, but if he must get a golf. At least slap him and tell him to get the 20v turbo option.

Not really, the MX5 is a very good car thats really fun to drive and has been for years, the civic again for this kind of money is hard to beat. However depending on what type of person he is, he may buy a different car but then always wish he had bought the golf instead!

Even as a Golf nut, I have to agree that the V6 4 Motion is not a fun car. Too soft, too heavy, and will be expensive to maintain. The pick of the MK4 range was the V5 170bhp version, closely followed by the 1.8T.

V5's were never popular, so have depreciated heavily. You basically get 1.8T performance and handling with a wonderful rasping exhaust note.

We are only talking £5k here dude, its not really an amount to get too worried over? Its not as if he is wanting to buy something weird :)

Exactly. Golfs are great cars and even though it might seem more expensive when compared to the competition, it'll hold its value well and probably not cost anything to run while he owns it.

For what I need, the Golf is perfect. It's subtle, well built, quick enough, handles well (despite what Fox seems to think), reliable and practical.
