OK, it would seem my car is in need of some new brakes...

The question is, would it be better for me to purchase some myself and have them fit them for me? (i.e. do garages normally fit naff cheap ones and charge you a premium)

Also would it be better having this done at some place like Kwik Fit or at the dealerships garage?

Cheers

DOH! ;) - I'm not really a car person so I can pretty much rule out fitting them myself.

On a side note, when comming to a stop I've intermittently noticed that the car seems to 'judder' - other than the pads / discs is there anything else that I'm likely to need changing from this? It's only done it a couple of times when halting from high speed (say at traffic lights from a 50 zone and comming to a late stop).

Get some Mintex discs and pads from ebay, it cost me £35 for the set inc del for my Focus. I bet a garage would charge you a fair bit more than that. Then just get them to fit them for you.

Alternatively if you have a drive and a mate who knows what hes doing get him to give you a lift and get him a few beers.

That judder sounds like ABS .... the pedal judder as well by any chance ? Call a few local indys and see how much a fit only will be. It shouldn't be that much more than an hours labour at most as it's generally not a complex job at all but that depends on the car.

The judder sounds like what was happening to mine. I felt the judder through the pedal and the steering wheel. It was due to the discs being worn too much and one of the pads was loose.

The garage i took mine to charged me £48 which i didn't think was too bad as they collected it from my house and then brought it back.

buy disks and pads from ebay/gsf/eurocarparts

go to hiq and get them to fit, they charged me £35 +VAT for rear disks and pads last time, sorted!

Yep exactly the same fault - its intermittent so I've only experienced it about 5 times now, I do find the breaks more unresponsive than when I originally purchased the car too. It's a MKV Fiesta Zetec S (06) so I'm guessing the brakes are due to be changed around now too.

As for me being in too higher gear - I pop the gear out to neutral when approaching to a stop so it isn't that I don't think.

Copper slip on the backs of the pads, thread lock on the calliper bolts ? Degreasing agent to clean the 'coating' that'll be on the disc's to preserve them

Is there not some special grease to use when bolting up the new disc?

Copper slip grease, just put a really fine coating on the mating surfaces to stop it corroding and sticking to the hub.

Are the Fiesta front discs not vented?, it says they're solid on that site.

I was thinking of just buying the above and having Kwik Fit put them on for me. I want some brakes that actually have some stopping power :) those seem to stop nearly twice as fast as some of the others!
