4870 1GB vs. GTX280 First Impressions

ATI drivers are crap, and thier cards and hotter and noiser as a rule. They donlt perform consistently enough either.

NV for me until ATI get thier act together.

heh hotter at 60 load ? 45 idle  i thought 280 fan is the loud as it spins up as it canot keep up with the heat 88 load ! some people are getting

Brilliant, the conclusion of the OP, despite being completely correct (If you want the highest consistent performance - buy a gtx280) has either been misread or completely ignored in order to drag the topic onto a subject ATI actually do well at.

That is only true with faulty cards. My 280 is pretty much silent at around 80'c with around 800 on the fan in game.

Are they any current high end cards, that aren't loud at full fan speed. My 8800GTX is pretty quiet imo, however I also have an X1950XTX which is ridiculously loud :D

GTX260 barely goes above it's idle RPM, which for all intents and purposes is silent like the 8800GTX. The 216 core models also don't ramp up either :)

I'm not suprised, the ATi loving on this forum is compromising its objectivity. ATi is the answer to everything, if it isnt the answer they just change the question. The tone is very different to any other graphics card forum.

It's a shame becuase it undermines the credibility of situations where the answer actually IS ATi, becuase you just dont know..

How true! I wouldn't look back at my 4870 ever, I was convinced, joineded the ATI fan club and it wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

I hate ATI my last card was a 9800pro. Its common knowledge on this forum.

Easyrider has been green for years purely because NV have had the best cards.

Been NV since then.

However NV playing silly games with the G92 cards put me off for the time being.

The over pricing on release of the NV cards 280 and 260 put me off

The Price and perfromance of the 4870 (so close to 280 but not in price) got me buying a 4870.

Its simple. Don't care who makes what but I'm not being made a fool of.

The early refunds of the NV cards after they realised they were ripping ther customers off was the final straw this time round.

Of course I'll buy NV cards again but not this Gen to the lack of realworld performance you get and the 70 quid extra you have to spend to go green for a 280.

Easy, you do realise both ATI and NV are corporations right? They have no ethical code, and will follow the rules of business to the letter. That means they'll charge whatever they can get away with. You don't think AMD are charging very little for the Phenom because they're trying to be generous do you? Cast your mind back to the Athlon FX series.

Incidentally, you don't think a 4870 costs ~£180 to manufacture and distribute do you?

NV didn't suddenly 'realise' they were ripping people off. You don't think they had a meeting and went 'omg! Do you realise we're making too much money!?! We better give it back to our customers!'. No! They reduced the price far more rapidly than usual, and some OEMs (not NV) decided to refund people the difference to keep them sweet so they'll buy more cards in the future.

You're making the mistake of getting emotional in a non-emotional part of the world - business. They want your money, and they'll do anything to get it.

Funny thing is that's what the G200 series is all about "Real World Performance" and not just benchmark numbers.

Why don't you try one? You might just be suprised.

The GTX 280 is pretty quiet unless you are unlucky and get one that overheats. 260 again are quiet.

Just been playing Terran Conflict and the temp sat around 65'c with the fan at a very slow 748 rpm. Thats pretty much Idle ( 700 )

The 18 months the gtx was on top and ati was getting it in the neck you seam to have forgot about that?

Yes Boogle. I use and abuse hardware on a daily basis.I have no emotional attchaments to PCB's My guitars yes...PCB's and GPU's no:p

I want bang for buck (this has not always been the case) I'm no longer prepared to pay good money for little performance gains

Hence why I bought a 4870 card.

I would get a 280 in a jiffy if they priced it right.

The urge to spend 70 quid more on something that will see me no stimulation or satisfaction over my current setup has gone.
