If I run Core Temp, I can see my Q6600's FSB flicking between 2400 (9.5 x 266) and 1600 (6 * 266)...

It's flicking around every few seconds? What's going on?

Intel speedstep reduces the multiplier when idle and raises again when needed.
You can disable this in the BIOS by C1E & EIST.

leave it on no need to disable it

Don't think you can if you're overclocking the CPU? It would be lovely to say run the Q6600 at 3200 and for it to slow down when not needed, but I don't think you can achieve that?

you can do this but not recommended when overclocking

system is not stable jumping back and forwards

disable it

Just noticed the system is still flicking between 6x400 & 7x400... Is that the "C1E & EIST" BIOS settings mentioned earlier? I haven't touched those!

In the BIOS I've specified 7x400... Will move onto 8 & 9x400 later...

Disable those and hopefully that should do it.
If your running Vista have a quick look at the power options in the control panel.
