any car salesmen here?

I'm not going to disagree because looks are subjective - if you think it looks better then clearly it does, because other peoples opinions of looks are irrelevent to your purchase :)

Agreed :)

Except its not, really, is it? It's not a poorly built car by any stretch of the imagination but neither is it anything special. As always VW are trading on past reputation. They used to build cars with high levels of perceived quality, the Mk4 Golf especially had this as its party trick but these days its not the case.

I`d disagree, but again its a moot point, I`d say the quality DOES look better on a Golf, not stunningly so but my perception is that it does look slightly more robust and better put together, but for sure this is perception probably.

Yes, it does.

cheers :)

They are not really that much more expensive than the Golf and for the premium over a used Focus you actually DO get a better quality interior, bigger choice of engines and, if it matters to you, a 'better badge'. Audi *is* a prestige badge, VW is not, irrespective of the shared ownership.

maybe

Mondeos as a whole, sure. But then Golfs as a whole vastly outnumber Mondeo ST TDCi 155's as rep-mobiles so I'm not entirely sure what your point is.

neither am I lol BUT my judgement is skewed by my dislike of the Mondeo's aesthetics

In the context of this thread, no, it's not good VFM. My alternative choice was a Mondeo ST220. The Mondeo ST220 was:

But you wanted a prestige marque, the ST220 is a Ford and therefore not really an equivalent car. Compare with MB, Lexus etc.

In terms of small hatchbacks, the Golf is widely regarded as a prestige model, (rightly or wrongly). If someone is interested in a Golf, they are also likely to be interested in an A3 or perhaps a 1 series but somewhat less so in a Ford. As you say it's irrational, but that's not stopped the Golf becoming one of the most sought after hatches.

MB and Lexus offered nothing I wanted. The choice, after much deliberation, came down to the ST220 or the 530. I'm not particularly concerned whether they are 'equivilent', they were the final two cars on my shortlist. I didn't want a prestige marque, frankly I wasnt that arsed about image, but one of my criteria was excellent perceived build quality which naturally lends itself to more premium marques.

Either way you are missing the point :p

any particular reasons for your appraisal?

It wasn't well built (although bare in mind it was a curtousey car), the handling setup of a hatchback did not suite the diesel engine (I cannot stand diesels so bare this in mind, and im coming from a good handling RWD sports car in my sig) and whilst being the 170, it felt ever so slow.

I'm sure these are personal opinions and may not be shared by many.

I can understand wanting a diesel, I can under stand wanting a hatch back, but 11k on one? When there are things like

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/699942.htm

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/733747.htm

Around for the same money (complete 3 different kinds of car mind), why on earth would one purchase a Slow, boring, Diesel, Hatchback. Especially when there are much better cars out there, such as the Mondeo mentioned. If you think a Golf is a step up in terms of image, well, at that level, image is nothing, your a nobody on the road no matter what you pick with this type of car.

I suppose its all about opinions, mine doesnt agree with ures I`m afraid but thanks for taking the time etc:). I can see your point about handling but I dont typically throw my car around a lot, pretty much i want a turn of foot for rapid overtaking, i find my MK4 GT TDI 150 does this superbly well, in fact for this type of maneouvre IMHO easier than my m8s Type R which u kinda have to work at.

ah so just saying LOL cleverly implies that your knowledge is far superior and my question is ludicrous?, by doing that you have not implied but have absolutely defined that you cannot be that smart :p

Mk5 Golfs are horrid to be in.

The interior dosn't scream quality at all, actually - it's rather awfull.

And, looks are subjective yea - they look dull and boring. Suited for a middle aged mum who drives to school everyday to pick up their kids.

err I`m middle aged :o:o, but not a mum :)

I think he was just expressing his amusement :P

As for the Golf, what is the difference between a sport and non-sport model as regards helping overtake? Is the non-sport 150?

Golfs are CRAP.

Fixed it for you :).

If you want a Golf then by all means go for one, but understand that there are plenty of other cars that offer superior performance, practicality and value for money that the golf.

At the end of the day, it is your money spend it however you wish, but please, PLEASE understand that having a VW badge on the front of your car justifies your delusions of grandeur - A Mondeo is a far better car.

The 'Sport' has higher spec of trim i think, looks a little nicer imho, I *think* (shows my lack of exhaustive or even cursory research lol) it has different suspension config? but I`d prob go for regular 170 if it was ok and right price.

I HONESTLY dont think VWs are elite or giving me status etc, HONESTLY I dont, I kinda like understated but with a quality thing, IMO (and it IS only my opinion) Golfs are decent quality, decent, thats it. I dont like the look of the Mondeos at all, I did look at the Auris 180bhp diesel ( I hear you laugh) but it just looks like an odd jelly mould. From what I can see a Golf isnt a BAD option and better than a lot for ME and MY needs?, I am genuinely open to suggestions and gratefully accede that you young uns have loads of pertinent current information to offer, and for that i`m grateful........honest!

Ok, if you want understated go for an Octavia heheh. I frequently get rotten fruit and vegetables thrown at mine. But bleh, if you're happy with a Golf go for a Golf. I don't know any other cat (car) to suggest, but I haven't been looking.

These 3 are better value
These 4 have more toys
These 3 are the same but cheaper
These 2 handle better
These 4 are better because less reps drive them
These 2 should be your first choice because I prefer them
That 1 is not as good as these 12

Just buy the bloody Golf. They are good all round cars, will do a job, are not that bad to drive and look nice with a fair interior. If that's what you want buy it as EVERYTHING ELSE is pretty much down to what YOU want or subjective opinion.

I'm not sure if that was sarcasm I detected there to there towards the end of your post? ;).

Like I said, your money, your car. If you're happy with the Golf then by all means by it. You'll never be able to win us over, so give up. We're looking at on paper specs more than anything, you have the money and you're going to be doing the driving - We can only pick the best car for someone in your situation , only you can pick the right car for YOU!

If you're happy stop trying to justify it to us and use that energy to find one within your price range! :)

no, oddly for me I wasnt being sarcastic :), yeah I know I know but I have some time on my hands as I have a car a loan to use whilst I 'source' the right car, but I do get a bit mental about picking the right option lol, dual core or quad core anyone? ;)

BroadBanner, can you pick me a car please?

The interior of the A3 and the golf are the same arent they?

Get yourself a nice 1 series.

Edit, at 16 miles a day, why do you want a deisel?
