GTA IV DRM

Errrm, there were wanted stars.

Each star gave a progressively larger area that you had to escape from without gaining attention from the police. This showed up as a circle in on the map. If the police see you before you're out of the area, you'd end up back in the center of the circle at square one.

there might as well not be is what he's saying. whats the point when you have a 4 star level and you can just get your car resprayed and poof away they all go. Or when you cna drive out of the flashing area and cops suddenly forget they are chasing you? NEE NOOR NEE NOOR NEE NOOO "Wait.....what were we doing? hmmm i forget. oh well lets get some doughnuts"

You get a search radius you have to escape that gets bigger each wanted level, which are stars, if you're spotted it centres back on you.

Like in every other GTA..

That's what I meant essentially yes. There will be some missions where you'll have half the city's cozzers on your rear end and yet you can either get your car resprayed (sometimes with a police car right outside) or just out race the radar - lets face it, you're in a huge dense city with lots of straight roads...

So not terribly realistic, but then GTA never has been. In past games the authorities would always know exactly where you were, even if you were hidden, and police cars would spawn magically at your location.

Boo ******* hoo. The only people this sort of thing seems to wind up are the ones looking to download it illegally.

I disagree its the people that buy the game that have the grief, friend of mine downloads games and he has no grief at all installs it and puts crack in and it works with no hassles.

You often see threads with people having issues with installing original games and getting hassles from the protection used, in the end you see posted from other members" download the crack to solve the problem", was it grid i remember reading about that had major issues with the protection they using on this game and in the end they released the crack in a update to solve the issue, the bottom line is the people that download illegally don't get any problems from them at all.

Well said.

Quite the opposite, it was an ill-informed comment where the reverse is true.

Restrictive copy protection with activation limits is a real concern and it only affects legitimate buyers.

However as I said before, it *sounds* as if GTA IV's scheme might not be too bad, compared to the likes of EA's scheme.

That was the same in San Andreas.

no, its far worse in gtaiv believe me. cops can be right outside and you can still get away. Watch you drive in to the paint N spray then forgot they are chasing you the instant the door closes, even with a wanted level of 4 and helicoptors flying over head.

How so? In San Andreas you could have the army and air force after you, with five stars, but pop into a pay & spray, buy a new T-shirt, get a hair cut or tattoo and they all pack up and go home. How Can GTA IV be worse than that for realism?

At least in Vice City, you could only dodge a two star wanted level that way.

Although I preferred the San Andreas system. Yes it is ridiculous and silly but it's GTA, it's meant to be like that.

I'm wondering if you have played San Andreas?

because its far easier in IV. ditto if you happen to be driving a fast car. find a nice straight road (there are a lot of them) it can take a few seconds to get outside of a circle and again, gone. its just far to easy to get rid of the cops in IV

I played the PS3 version about 2/3 of the way through before getting stuck. Hopefully will fare better with the PC version, also with the console version there was always pressure on the TV "slot" which cut down the amount of time I spent on side missions or just exploring.

I have resigned myself to DRM (under protest) so far as SecureROM is concerned, however I won't put Starforce anywhere near my PC.

I don't mind keeping the disc in the drive though it will be interesting to see how that affects if I have to replace/renew the disc after extended use. I had to replace my SA disc at around 18 months old as the DVD was cracked due to heavy use.

Not sure what this GTA "social club" is all about. I'm an anti-social misfit at the best of times so not really into multiplayer or online, though I guess uploading Gamerscores to Windows Live isn't going to hurt. Wonder if it could also be a front for In Game Advertising?

People just whine about this now that SecuRom has gotten loads of media attention.

SecuRom has been on games for years now, its only the install limit thing that is new.

And why has it attracted so much media attention? Because people are very concerned about the install limits. People aren't concerned because the media are making a fuss; it's the other way around.

Some EA games have an install limit of five. If you reinstall Windows and then reinstall the game, it counts as a new install - even on the same machine. Clearly you could easily use up your five installs within a few years. After that you either throw the game away, or contact EA and ask them if you can please play the game you have bought and paid for

And some people wonder why we are unhappy about this?

Well I'm glad there's no install limit.

That's the only thing that irks me as a customer I guess.

Well I notice the 1* reviews have already started to appear on South American River despite release still being 4 days away. While I'm keeping an open mind on that tactic it does of course pose the issue that too many negative reviews (even if these are just for the DRM) will give Rockstar the excuse they need not to bother with PC versions of GTA in future. They already failed to put LCS and VCS on PC and played hard to get over whether IV would even get a PC release.

As indicated above, I had no real pleasure playing GTA IV on the PS3, compared to SA on the PC.

That's fine by me as I though San Andreas was the worst one of the bunch. Mainly because of the scenario - the music was awful (not into rap/hip hop) and the ghetto setting I was bored with after five minutes.

Hopefully this is going back to GTA VC which, in my opinion, was the best of the lot.

M.
Agree with you about the music in SA. I turned it off straight away but gameplay wise SA had lots going for it variety was huge in that game as was the number of locations. IV is very small and nowhere near as good as VC or SA. Its just very limited gameplay wise you have about 4-6 different mission types and thats it. Think you could kill about 200 birds but no collecting hidden packages either. Everyone will rave about the gfx I'm sure but in a few weeks gamers who did not already know will realise its a good game just a poor GTA game (in relation to the others).

Some of the radio stations & ingame adverts are genius, very controversial & adult in nature.

Longtime GTA fans will take issue with how empty the game feels as once you have done the main story missions (and endured the 100 or so ingame cutscenes which are very samey and annoying at times) your not left with much else to do. In VC & SA you could spend months doing side missions & collecting things here there is none of that.

Its still well worth getting even if like me you completed it on the consoles just do not expect it to be like the hyped reviews of 98-100% 10/10 etc etc.

Haven't you tried other radio stations in SA?
I always listened to K-DST ( Classic Rock, like Toto-hold the line, Kiss, etc...) or Radio-X ( Alt/modern rock).

Imo GTA SA is far superior to VC and III. I like the story but the main reason it simply has a much bigger nicer world with much mroe to do( love countryside). Also all the sidemissions: I loved trucking, valet missions, etc... The only things SA needs imo is a gfx overhaul, and fixing the traffic& world: Trucks should have trailers, cars should indicate when changing lanes on motorways instead of always cutting you off trying to kill you, add detail to the roads: Better road markings, more traffic signs. Fix the bloody pop-up effect or make it at least 30X bigger for vehicles and people, when flying in a plane the world below looks like a died out planet... And of course GTA IV graphics and physics. Needs more vehicles too and much more tuning options...

Anyways, I just hope gta iv has the same type of story as VC/SA, and that the cars still have great physics ( love the suspension wobbling ) and well that's it, it must be fun to drive around for me as thats what I do mostly in GTA games...
