I built a new system recently, and the two games I most had in mind to play were GTA IV and Need for Speed Undercover.

I have bought both games.

My system is not uber but it is decent. Q6600, 9600GT, 2GB RAM, XP Pro.

They both run like poop.

More than that, both games are poop regardless of performance.

I just thought I'd vent.

9600GT is a mid-range card... think this is where you are lacking mate... although it should run it decentlly enough i would have thought, perhaps the 2gb is a problem? Im not sure i dont have those games and no idea on the requirements.

NFS has been rubbish really for quite a while (imo).

GTA is indeed a disappointment, however the pc platform is going fine...
I've enjoyed fallout3, CoD WaW, L4D (the demo then), Far Cry2, and others a lot...

Just hope saints row 2 will not be the same fail as GTA IV.

As said the 9600GT is the weakness, something like a 9800/4850 is where you might want to upgrade to.

As also mentioned we all know GTA IV is pretty poor, but the N4S games normally require a bit of GPU power for nice settings. Don't judge until you have played a "proper" game not some rubbish port :)

It's just those two games ;) Neither come close to using the whole 2 gigs.

I've played various other games and they run like a dream. eg. Bioshock, UT3 (both crap but they run well! ;)) Grid runs superbly maxed out etc. It is a decent system. I've enjoyed re-playing older games maxed out like Half Life 2, NFS Most Wanted + Carbon etc.

I paid £77 for the 9600GT and I know it isn't high end. But it is still a decent card.

Another game I can run maxed out at 60fps or so is Test Drive Unlimited which has better graphics than the two games I mentioned yet runs much better.

Judging by the GTA 4 thread, people with my CPU and GTX 260s etc. are getting poor performance so it's just a badly coded game.

i dont think its the card, them 2 games are badly coded and NFS runs like dog on my pc, even tho i can play crysis warhead maxed out with out a hickup. all i can say is download the games before you buy them, or at least read reviews.

Yeah NFS Most Wanted both looks, runs and plays significantly better.

I have played the demo of NFS ProStreet and that runs very well too (even if the game is crap).

It's a quality card, just it's still the weakness in your system.

I get about 11.5k in 3dmark06 btw. 54k in 3dmark2001.

The 9600GT is the weakest component but still decent. I am only playing at 1280x1024 after all.

I can see that if you didn't have a console then GTA IV could be appealing but NFS:U as they've been hit or miss for some time now... strange choice of games in my opinion to build a new machine for because if you wanted to play just those you could have bought a console.

There are plenty of decent games for the PC so I wouldn't judge it by what you've bought.

Aye - two poorly ported games. GTA4 is my biggest disappointment for the year (I can't even get the bugger to load). But there is plenty more out there for you to enjoy. Some titles I've been impressed with this year:

  • Mass Effect
  • Fallout 3
  • Assassin's Creed
  • GRiD
  • Call of Duty 4 (yeah, it came out last year but I didn't get it until Feb)

I didn't build it just for those games - my old rig was very old (P4 3.0C and Geforce4 Ti 4600, circa 2003) :)

I haven't tried the first three of those - maybe I should :) I expect my rig will run them well.
