Vauxhall Astra 1.7CDTi EcoFlex

Surpised. The Focus I thought was considerably better in every possible way - the Mk5 Astra sums up everything wrong with Vauxhall. Truely nasty.

Coming from a person who actively seeks Vauxhall threads to put down the owner the fact he has bought a Vauxhall and says he is a BMW fan boy go figure, got a big head much? Wouldn’t expect any less from somebody like you to post as much VX drivel.

My parents one has been very reliable, no problems with it in nearly 3 years of ownership. I liked driving it too, but I'm more than happy to admit that I haven't driven many cars. Can't really understand what's supposed to be so bad about it though.

I beg to differ. It might not be amazing but its certainly no worse than its rivals such as the focus ect.. The average joe certainly doesn't care about handling. I found it just as comfortable as a focus and the build quality is just as good too.

Well, I'm not the average Joe, I do care about the handling.
I found the Astra, overall, is markedly inferior to both the Focus and the Golf.

I've not driven any performance variants of the new Astra but the cooking versions I've tried all had flat spots the size of the Atlantic Ocean, which was incredibly frustrating.

It does look quite nice though, for a modern hatch.

Fiat Bravo's apparently

Kia Pro Ceed?

MMM the Kia Eco Cee'd

Whats worse?

It's only nice to drive if you've recently stepped out of a Corsa or a Yugo.

My God, with the way you come across sometimes have you considered buying an Audi.

You really have lived a sheltered life if you think an Astra is such a bad car. Maybe they are not to the same standard of an 5 series BMW but compared to the Focus they are an equal match for the large majority of drivers.

If Vauxhall make such terrible cars, why didn't they go bust years ago?

They are nice to drive, I've driven most of its rivals too. Yes there is better but its no where near the bottom of the list like people make out.

I have to say I am with you on this one. It is doing my head in listening to silly comments such as " Astra is a truely awful Car ". It honestly cannot be that bad considering the amount on the road and considering I've never heard any complaints or common problems with them.

Personally I see nothing wrong with them at all and I have driven one several times and found nothing wrong with it, I even think its a pretty nice looking car compared to some of its rival cars, especially the 3Dr / SXi models. Personally, I would much rather a nice spec'd Astra over a Focus, Kia Ceed.

I will admit that is insane money for the EcoTec 1.7 CdTI, but there are some nice deals to be had on certain models out there.

So come on, cut the crap. Astra's are hardly an awful car.

There is not bad about it.

Vauxhall don't make terrible cars, they make (for the large part) distinctly underwhelming, average cars.

And for a forum full of people who are (supposedly) enthusiastic about cars and driving as a whole, that just isn't good enough.

You can hardly call the OPC underwhelming :D

Maybe, but then again ford do the exact same thing, but manage to do a much better job at it, as do Honda, Skoda, VW etc.

You can buy it there for the bargain price of 11,742

Actually the Kia Ceed is supposed to be pretty decent - I'd not commit without a proper drive but I suspect given the choice I'd take it over the Astra.

I'm sure it is quite decent, especially with the warranty Kia are shipping these out with. I have never driven it either, but I have seen quite a few on the road and personally they do nothing for me. I find the majority of Korean cars very bland to look at, although the Ceed is a nice turn around compared to some other korean cars on the market. That is the reason I mentioned it.

Out of interest, what would be your reasons not to like a 1.9CDTi 150BHP Astra?

looks quite nice imo, certainly less bland than an astra, which is incredibly dull in 5 door form
the 3 door is quite nice though

Poor interior quality - I hate touching nasty, cheap plastics
Ungainly handling
Annoying noisy rattle from the engine compartment constantly, makes the dash shake when sitting at traffic lights
Irritating power delivery

I will say I've not driven a 150, I can't remember what the Astra was, it might have been a 130?

I havent got a problem with the car, just the price, its 17 freeking grand.

The current Astra is just as fun in normal guise, to drive as the focus, the dash is cheap and nasty, but the rest of the car is perfectly acceptable considering is traget market.

But 17k, come on, no way is it worth that kind of money, no way, even looking at new cars, you can get base-ish spec A3/1 series, or a decent spec Focus/Golf.Hell you could get a Mondeo or Insignia.

Most of the dash is soft touch plastics the same as the focus. I don't find that mine rattles at all. Not sure if mine differs from what you drove.

You have a VXR though with a petrol engine so of course it's not going to have that annoying diesel thrum through the dashboard :p
