3 Grand on the table. What would *you* buy?

But as pointed above, it's largely academic. I would buy an M5 for £3k. And a house in Surrey.

A £3k car which is £3k because it needs a good £1500 spending on it to bring it up to scratch is not a £3k car its a £4500 car.

Stop being so defensive :p You know they are available for around this money as well as i do. Wont be a mint one like yours, but for a workhorse at the money, i wouldn't care.

There is a slight chance that a 330i will be landing with me soon @ half this budget by the looks of things, so thats my new 3 grand on the table car for the moment.

Whilst I'm sure you could overlook cosmetic shabbyness on a workhorse you can't overlook having to shell out to repair mechanical shabbyness though. I know you could well afford to spend £3k and then another £1-£1.5k getting it up to scratch without issue but as I said its not really a £3k car anymore is it? And if you'd put up with tired suspension why buy a Sport in the first place, just get an SE which you probably will start to find for around £3k.

The fact you've now decided you are going to get a 1500 quid E46 330i instead, when people on this forum are searching for months forold E36 328i's for £2k and struggling to find good ones, does rather highlight how completely out of touch with reality any post you ever make on car values really is :p

Knowing you, you will indeed get a 330i for 1500 quid and it'll be a facelift model with all the toys, but you are far, far from normal when it comes to obtaining cars as you well know, so your experiences are pretty much irrelevent. You might as well recommend a CLS320 CDI for £0 in every single thread, it's pretty much the same thing.

8.6 seconds to 60 from a car which will deliver 20mpg is 'no slouch'? It's terrible.

For a wafty old yank tank it seems pretty reasonable to me. Considering the car has absolutely no sporting pretensions I wouldn't have been surprised with 10 seconds or more. From a, equivalent European barge it certainly would be dire, but then again the vast majority of yank cars from the 80s and 90's were dire compared to European equivalents.

I'd buy a really nice E30 325i Sport, or maybe just a mint 325i, spend the rest on a few tweaks or refreshing.

Or a really nice Triumph 2000/2500 saloon.

Or a Camaro.

Or a Supra.

Or a Firebird.

Or an RX7.

Or a Mercedes 190E 2.6/Cosworth.

Or..........
