pointless in terms of value though. THe card could well be looking at having a replacement version out by then, although if they are bringing a new X2 out isn't clear, though having two separate single cards crossfired normally if they are 20-25% faster still leaves this as a second choice solution.
Theres a chance that the refresh won't be that impressive(with apparently a very turd 40nm process screwing things up significantly) so buying a new cooler in march might be on a top end card till November/december.
When will they get their act together, ati, nvidia and the cooler makers and get things sorted so they are available from release. £50 extra for a cooler is far more attractive an option when you can use it the whole time you have the card, not just the last month before you sell it on.
But then, its looking more and more likely the next gen of cards from ati are ditching the blower fans which is the cause of the crap cooling. Stock heatsink with shroud gone and a silent fan cools infinately better than with shroud and blower fan. With most of the more recent ati products, 4850x2, and LOTS of 3rd party cards coming out with more normal fans blowing onto the heatsinks it seems to be the way all the companies are wanting to go.
Its still a kick in the teeth to charge £40 for it this late in the day when you can stick a £4 zalman fan on the stock sink with 20p's worth of zipties and get the same cooling performance.
the performance numbers are a touch off aswell, with the stock cooling I only hit in the 90c's under full load with the fan at default speed of 27%, I can't hear that at all, the airflow or the fan. The fan speed/noise might be accurate, but I think at 27% rivatuner shows it at what, 1300rpm where its basically silent. At the rpm they showed mine drops from the 90's to the mid/high 60's, just at an unbearable noise.
