3d mark06 is out of date and doesn't give a good representation of the performance of the latest cards.

also your cpu and amount of RAM is going to be a bottleneck as soon as you fire up a game.

sorry to say it, but your CPU is absolute poosauce.

You need to upgrade to either a Phenom 2/Core2/Core i7 platform.

CPU makes a nice difference:
q9550 @ 3.4ghz.............amd 6000+ windsor @ 3.2ghz
overall - 9970................8499
sm2 - ...3690................3546
sm3 - ...4006................3825
cpu - ...5019................2362

With x1950 pro crossfire :)
But what the scores don't say is that with core2 everything is more responsive

You should compare like for like. Check the subscores. It should have been more visible! The way it is with the big numbers (half of it being CPU) is useless IMO.

Hmmm... good job I didnt go for the 4870x2...!!

Got it to 11250 with a few overclocks to card and cpu...

Thought it was time for a system upgrade anyway.. but i7 is way beyond my means... need a mid range quad system...

Thanks for your advice...

For reference I got the following with a HD4870 512mb (stock), X2 4400+ @ 2.5ghz, 2GB DDR400 in Win XP 32bit:

3DMark Score: .... 9780
SM 2.0 Score: .... 4261
SM 3.0 Score: .... 5316
CPU Score: ........ 1920

Given the CPU bottlekneck and the small performance difference between the 4870/4890, your score seems fine, apart from the SM2.0 score which is tad bit low.

clocked to 935mhz (stock voltage) and 975 memory (stock) this is what I got with my wolfy :)

will settle with 11460... lol, afterall its only a benchmark!!!!

975 core gpu
4600 ram
3ghz CPU

Couldnt keep 1ghz gpu stable, not even with volt maxed out.. still a good card at its price pint... now for some gamin!!!!

My 8800GT scored 12,005 with my CPU at 3.22ghz (e6300), so the X2 is the problem. However unless you're playing at a low resolution it won't make a massive difference in games.

I made a similar thread about a week ago.

Bascally, got 1000 more 3dmarks from 8800gts 512mb to a 4890 1gb.

3d mark06 is 90% cpu related! I overclocked my cpu to 3.6ghz (from 3ghz) and gained 1600 marks.

3d mark is more of a cpu test that graphics!

^^ What he said. Plus if you done the benchmark at higher resolutions then you would see your score come more into line. Use your games for the benchmark as it's the best source. When you go to see an article for a new card it's the games benchmarks that are important. I never read the 3dmark benches :).

Try and get an overclock on that CPU also. It's pretty easy to learn if you have patience. 2.8Ghz-3Ghz would see a little boost in your gaming I'd think. Not amazingly better but every little helps. If not I'd say 2.6ghz will be fine for 1680x1050 and above but personally I'd have that CPU at 2.8Ghz+. This will help a lot for a few cases at 1680x1050 and even more at below this resolution.
