Banded Demoiselles have been on my hit liost for a long time now. Have hardly ever seen one, but a few weeks ago I was told about a local spot where they had been seen. Well I found the spot. And sure enough, the Banded Demoiselles are there. Love these little creatures, and was fortunate enough to spot this couple going at it;

Got more shots of Banded Demoiselles on their own, but need to process them still. I'll also keep going back to get the 'perfect shot'.

:)

they certainly are beautiful, great pictures. i like the way their bodys make the shape of a heart in the first one.

good stuff.

Thanks. Yeah, I love the way they have formed that shape as well. :)

crikey. any specific special equipment to get shots like that?

I used my usual combo of my D300 and Sigma 150mm f2.8 Macro lens. Im also playing with my DIY macro flash diffuser now as well;

yours looks a lot tidyer than mine :)

Hehe, looking good! I took my inspiration from loads of different designs found on the internet. I then scetched up some plans and went all blue peter with the card and ductape. This is just a prototype though. The next version will be a lot ligther and more adaptable. :)

bet you get some funny looks when your out with that kit m8, but mighty fine pics i must say.

Cheers. Hehe, I got more funny looks by crawling through the undergrowth looking for the bugglies. :D

Great images.

Thank you. :)

Out of interest, what diffusion medium are you using across the front of the tube?

For this prototype im using Lee spun diffuser sheets. Its like a really flat and thin wool designed for diffusing studio lights. When I remake it im going to make several diffuser filters as we also have several grades of Lee frost sheets. :)

Yep it's worth experimenting, Lee/panalux filter number 216 and 251 are probsbly best for use as diffusion, they use tons of the stuff when shooting stuff for TV programs. :)

Very helpful; thanks.

I tend to use Rosco stuff in my otherlife as a thatre techie, but I might nip along to Stage Electrics and see what I can get hold of.... Lee 216 (or the equivalent Rosco E-colour 216) looks a good first shot, rather than a half- or full tough spun.

Would certainly be interested in a follow-up post with your findings as you try different media, if you'd be so kind? :)
