She's American, not Canadian. Same thing though I guess ;)

Hmmm...i thought she was Canadian. That's not the sort of thing i mess up on purpose, being Welsh and all. I'm automatically assumed to be English just like the Canadians are assumed to be American, and Kiwi's to be Aussie ;)

If you had a 200mph head wind, and the plane was producing 180mph of thrust whilst airborne (enought o keep it stable), would it go backwards, relative to groundspeed?
Aerodynamics will play a huge part in that, however you're misunderstanding thrust. Thrust is power relative to the object it is pushing against (in this case, the atmosphere behind the plane).

With a propeller craft, it is possible to create a vacuum behind the props the will cause the craft to cease forward motion (relative to ground). However the plane will still remain aloft due to the lift produced by the wind passing under the wings.

With a jet the wind is creating vortices behind the craft which will provide the necessary matter behind the plane for the engine to function properly. Again, that's when aerodynamics come in to play regarding the forward momentum of the craft.
