Hey guys & gals,

On the 8th August i'm having Laser Eye Surgery and i'm a tad nervous... :(

I had my consultation on the 4th July where they did the tests and told me exactly what happens and how much it'll cost (A LOT) and he said that there will be some mild miscomfort and i'm worried that i might accidently rub my eye and go blind

Anyway, has anyone here had laser eye surgery and can they tell me what experience they had?

Thanks :)

my parents both had laser eye surgery my dad handled it fine, my mum was in bed for several days whining about the pain... although i believe with the tech now you are fine after a day or two.

i plan to do it when im 25 or so

My dad had it done a few years ago, his vision is no better and his eyes hurt all the time :(

just joking, his sight is excellent now

after his op they did hurt a little and it took a few months to fully heal but he says it was worth every penny

Those I know who've had it done fall into two camps. Camp one is the over the moon happy best money they ever spent camp, Camp two is the been back several times and it's still not right ****ed off camp. There are more poeple in Camp one than camp two but I ain't risking the downsides for the sake of vanity.

Had it done on Friday, it's no problem at all. I had intralase wavefront LASIK with Optical Express. Cost £2700. -3.25 -2.5, mild astigmatism in both. LASIK allows you to be up and about the next day. On Friday I went to bed at 8pm and woke with fresh eyes and great vision. I was active at the weekend and drove the next day after they'd given me the all clear. The day after the surgery I was seeing equally as well as I had done with contacts. It's an amazing feeling.

Rubbing your eyes will not cause blindness in itself. If you rub your eyes and the flap dislodges, you need to go back and get it 're-fitted'. The problem would be if you rubbed your eyes then got something stuck under it and didn't go and see anyone for an antibiotic flush. Then you'd get potentially get an infection and possible further sight complications.

They warned me that the only uncomfortable thing about the actual procedure was the suction cup putting pressure on your cornea to keep it in position for the flap creation. In fact this was hardly any pressure tbh and I barely felt a thing. The tearing and sore feeling after the aneasthetic wore off was far worse but only lasted for a few hours.

Vanity?

It's nothing to do with how I look, I just want to be able to see without having to rely on glasses/contacts.

Its this flap cutting business that puts me off. I just can't get my head around the idea of part of my eye being effectively cut and peeled back. Eyes just arent supposed to do that

So you'll turn down any open heart surgery or cranial operations that may be required in the future? :p

I'm squeamish about eyes but it's no problem. Just think of it as your eye's skin. They're not actually cutting into the eye jelly or anything, nor anywhere near muscles or the optic nerve.

Yeah, its the being concious during the process part I have problems with. I guess you yourself would probably be slightly perturbed if you had to have someone drilling the through your skull whilst you are still wide awake.

10 minutes of discomfort is worth it in my eyes (lol!)

If only I had the cash.... :(

Slightly different, those are likely to be life saving surgeries where your options are strictly limited. An optional cosmetic eye op is hardly comparable, I wouldn't do a parachute jump for fun but I sure as hell would if my life depended on it.

I sometimes am tempted to have this done. I wonder though if there's the option to be put under for the procedure. I seriously could not have it done in my senses!

You can't be under as the procedure is short and your eyes roll back when you are under.

Interesting to read that a laser technique has been developed to combat Age-related macular degenration, effectively the main cause of blindness in old age.

Had an eye test last month:

Apparently I can't be a pilot with 0.25 in each eye? ah well, colourblind anyway:p
