Got the keys for my new house today and need to look into getting contents insurance.

What companies have students--or indeed anyone--been insured with in the past and can recommend?

I might just go with Endsleigh. I got a quote from them for £100 for the year to cover my £650 laptop and £2500 worth of possessions (plus accidental damage and holiday cover if I'm away). Does that seem ok?

I was also wondering if anywhere does deals for groups of students. I mean, we have 4 guys living in our house and it'd be convenient if we could all just get put on the same policy which covers all of our stuff, at maybe a discount price.

Do you live with your parents when you're not at uni? You might be covered on their contents insurance, up to a certain amount.

My parents don't have contents insurance; they never have. But in answer to your question: No, probably not. I might go back home for a few days over Christmas, but that's about it. But hey, that's pretty much irrelevant now! :p

Expect you'll have to go with a specialist.

I'm not s student, but there are 3 of us (unrelated) living in the same house - all young professionals.

Direct line wouldn't touch us with a barge pole because of the risk of us stealing from each other... they'd only cover us if each room was locked and we kept all our possessions in our own private space, which is retarded.

We ended up getting sorted via our local branch of A-Plan.

I use the AA but I think the insurance is actually from Lloyds TSB on the letter.
£11/month.
Covers my mac for £2500, accidental damage to any item including water damage(ie I spill a drink on something) and I think the total covered is £15k+.

endsleigh, cost me about 25quid a year, if i remember rightly, but to be honest i never used it and i could be guestimating wrong.
