The missus needs a new runaround and has 2k cash to spend on it. It will be used for a daily commute of 20 miles and some longer motorway trips at weekends.

She wants something with a bit of poke, that will give her trouble free miles. So far her fave is a Golf GT TDI. Any other suggestions in that budget that would get her more for the money and be very reliable?

Thanks for any help.

There is no way you'll get a Golf GT TDI for £2k thats not a wreck! She needs to lower her sights a bit. Focus 1.6 or something? Still going to be pushing a decade old, though.

Like I say guys, I have no idea what to go for :) I just picked up the keys to a new car every few years and if it goes wrong take it to the garage. That's my limit with cars.

So look at a focus then? Will have a butchers at what can be had... thanks for the tips :)

Golfs are ok, but they all need bushies replacing, as they are prone for knocking etc, engines are good, Golfs are bland, and you dont really get much of a car for the price.

Tell me again why he's better getting a Focus than a Golf?

Remember though, there is girl logic involved in this car purchase. She will want one that looks cute and has places to put her lipsticks/handbags/shoes and god knows whatever else...

I don't think she will be happy with a focus as it will seem a bit bland...

The main thing i dislike about the older Focus is the shape of the dash, whilst the Golf interior isn't exactly the work of genius but i still think its a better place to sit (if you get the right spec).

A 2k golf GT TDI is going to be ropey. If she's set on the golf over the more sensible suggestion of a Focus (although get a 1.6, the 1.8 is barely any quicker and its thirstier) then look at the Toledo - same basis as the golf but a lot cheaper. A 1.9 TDi SE circa 2000 with sensible miles should be about 2k

Seat Leon TDI.

Wife has one. Its the 90HP model but does what it needs to for her. I'm sure you could pick one up for £2k. My wifes is probably worth not much more and its been well looked after.

Think what he actually means is she wants to be driving around with something with a badge to rival BMW :p

*Not being serious, but some VW owners see it this way.
