Which is strange, because I have Ubuntu installed on it.

But my Windows XP disk can't detect that I have a hard drive, so it won't install. Help? :(

a) Either press F6 when asked right at the beginning of the windows xp setup, and provide a floppy disk with the hard disk controller drivers on (can download this from laptop manufacturer's website)

OR

b) Look in the bios for an option relating to the sata hard disk. There may be an option to change the HD from AHCI mode to IDE mode. This will resolve it.

OK I might try that. I've dug up some ancient "recovery disks" that I once made for this laptop. The first one at least seems to be intact enough to do stuff, so I'm hopeful this will reinstall XP complete with all the proper drivers.

If not, I'll try that BIOS thing. I don't have a floppy drive.

Is it because of the format of the drive.

What have you formatted the drive too?

If you want to format it completely for XP, download GParted and format it to NTFS.

+1

Even if it was formatted in another type of file system, the setup should still pick it, but if it's not picking it up at all then try one of the 2 above, I think option b will be the quicker option
