2k Budget advice please!

We looked at an A3 1.8T - was a terrible terrible mess of a car. The seller was a copper and the car looked bent to me.

Still think a Leon would be the best best. Its effectively the same car Golf/A3/Leon.

The Golf is generally poorer value than a Focus, because of inflated prices. The A3 is an Audi with prices inflated even further. It may or may not be better built than the Golf, but odds are that one of the same age and price is going to be in worse condition.

I don't see any situation in which buying a £2000 premium car is anything but a big gamble - it will be either old or ragged and both are likely to mean the car is a money pit.

Though this is all a little less relevant with OP's latest update.

I find the A3 a particularly boring looking little car. How old is she?

It says quattro so I assume its that half-ar5ed 4WD they use?

I wouldn't.

I would spend £2k on new pads and discs all round and 2 new tyres

oooh I am bitter today :p

I've got that to look forward to when I eventually decide on what to get myself in 6 months time...

@iaind She really fancies the Audi/VW. Don't ask me why those badges are better than a Seat in her mind...she's a woman!

Well, there is German built, or Spanish built for a start.. May as well suggest a Skoda if its just VW family ;)

I like the Seats, but would take a VW over the Seat in most cases, even having to pay a premium.

However, for 2k, to get best value, you are gonna have to shop around properly, anything that looks like a bragain, probably wont be... althouh you can get lucky with someone desperate these days of credit crunches and high unemployment.

i would suggest a focus 1.8 zetec little bit pokey not bad on fuel and cheap to buy.

Ignore this post. If you're going to buy a Focus buy a 1.6 or a 2.0. Avoid the 1.8 petrol. Yes it's pokey, but drinks a lot more fuel than the 1.6 for a small gain in performance. It's going to be 10 years old but you don't have much of a choice with that budget. A German car with German parts when things go wrong is more expensive than when a Focus goes wrong. There's crap loads of them about so finding the right one shouldn't be too hard.

Yaris? Pretty decent little cars...

About as much poke a tortoise on sedatives ;) Those Mk1s are also unbelievably tinny - the doors clang everytime you shut them and the interior is nasty.

As for Golf TDis....massively overpriced for what they are, and its nasty, clattery, smokey diesel.....

Surely, a fast runabout for £2K, points you into Clio 172 territory.

The 1.8 isn't that much worse on fuel, and it's a stronger, more reliable engine. The 2.0 is quite a bit more thirsty again. Either way it's not German so the OPs wife isn't going to be interested.
