Will You Buy Windows 7???

I'm not so sure about these HUGE amounts of RAM. 2.5 years ago 2GB was plenty. Now it's 4GB. I don't think about that as a doubling in 2.5 years, rather adding 2GB.

In another 2.5 years it could just as well be 6GB rather than 8GB, and in 5 years 8GB rather than 16GB.

If there's one thing we've seen over the last ~3 years it's hardware developing faster than software. The jump from 4GB to 8GB, a whole extra 4GB is huge, what software will need an extra 4GB?

I'm confident that the 16GB limit on Home Premium isn't going to be an issue for the vast majority of people here within the lifetime of the Windows 7 product.

Home premium being limited to 16gb ram doesn't sound very good. In about 2-3 years many enthusiasts will be on 24/32gb ram

Probably 4GB to 8GB max by then, anyway most enthusiasts users will probably be on Windows 8 by then ie 2012 ;) ,also remember a lot of modern motherboards have 16GB limited so its not really an issue.

So... sorry, need to clear this up. The prettier half wants to take advantage of the Student Discount for Win7, what are the limitations of this? Does it affect the install in any way or is it a fully functioning retail version (dependant on key used)? How does it affect the licence as well?

She already has a copy of Vista Basic OEM, so will the key then produce a copy of 7 Home Basic (OEM)? However, i thougth it wasn't an upgrade, so will it just install 7 Home Premium (OEM)?

Sorry guys, anyone got an answer for this?

So because you get no better performance in a game using Windows 7 you won't upgrade? Nice reasoning. Let's all never upgrade because our FPS doesn't improve using the next OS.

There is not need for that remark in these forums.

The reasoning is perfectly sound. The guy uses his computer for gaming. He sees no improvement in his games switching so doesn't switch.

What part of that don't you understand?

I am buying windows 7 but there are two main reasons behind it.

1) I now have 4 gig memory so I need to move from XP32bit anyway

2) At 50 quid the price is reasonable for the OS.

I didn't move to Vista for the same reasons as the poster you are berating for not moving.

Why an extra 8GB? 8GB is loads... if you need more than the 8GB you have wouldn't 10GB or even 12GB make more sense than a whopping 16GB?

Nope, as increments don't work like that.

256k, 512k, 1mb, 2mb per stick. So assuming dual channel the next leap after 8GB is 16GB

I'm already running 12GB - but I'm on a tripple-channel Intel system, 12GB of DDR3.
I believe in theory I can actually go to 24GB on this board (replace my 6x 2GB modules for 6x 4GB) but really I cannot see that happening any time soon.
The 12GB I've currently got is extremely overkill and only there because of a "deal you cannot refuse".

I have joined the party and preordered the Home Premium Retail version from OCuk.

I can only commend Microsoft for facing the reality that people don't want to pay as much as they have been asking for previous versions of Windows.

At this point we can only wait and see if the prices really do go up and stay there on release.

Yeah, but your REQUIREMENTS don't work like that. What data are you likely to be working with that means one day 4GB is enough then you need an EXTRA 4GB rather than an extra 2GB.

I too jumped on to the pre-order party. I'm looking forward to installing Home Premium on a fresh Samsung F3 drive

The pre-order price seems within a lot of peoples budgets - maybe this will deter getting a copy elsewhere, and as a knock on effect stop so many people being riddled with pre-installed bugs

I see so often on these forums people judging every piece of hardware that comes out, on how well it games. People use computers for much more than just gaming. When I see them judge an OS on how well it games I just find that very strange. Since when was an OS written with an objective at any level to provide a better gaming experience by gaining a mere few percent on FPS? Never. So why would Windows 7 be any different? It won't. I would like to see someone who can tell what OS they are gaming on in a blind test, XP, Vista, Wndows 7. The performance is so close it's not measurable in an actual games perforance. Yes, it will show up in a benchmark...good for you. If you want to stay with OS X Y or Z because a benchmarking tool shows you get 2 FPS extra average in 3d mark tests then I find that...well...ridiculous.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people like that.
I remember when XP Service Pack 2 was released - it contained a fair amount of fixes, features etc.
However a whole bunch of people over at Futuremark would not update because their 3DMark scores were dropping by around 5%.

To be fair gaming performance is about the the same from benchmarks over at firingsquad, sure you get XP trading blows with Vista/Win7 etc... however most people upgrade when they feel they need too not because of 3DMark etc...,personally I can take or leave Win7,infact I removed it a few weeks ago and installed good old Linux on my other PC.

My Vista x64 has been excellent over the years to me,I'm going to wait until my next upgrade before I go to Win7 or maybe even Win8,end of the day we all have different needs/expectations.

I think the same. 6-8GB will be max in next 2-4 years. Only some marketing actions (Win8 minimum requirement of 8GB or something) can force people to upgrade to 16GB or more.
4GB RAM is even too much for movies (1080p), for graphics and other applications that normal end users use. Even for new games its ok.

Soon or later we will be forced to upgrade, cause "they" need to sell something all the time :)

edit: back to the topic - im not going to give my money to MS for vista2 (win7). No need to upgrade. Everything works fine on Vista and XP.

I agree - it annoys me too. You show half of this forum a new OS like Vista or 7 with dozens of features to make using your PC better, and they stay on XP because it gives them 5 extra FPS that they probably won't notice. That's fine when it's just their loss, but when they start making recommendations to other people and you have to correct their misinformation...
