District 9 review...it's looking good... **SPOILERS**

Watched it lastnight, brilliant film, felt so fresh and original.
Effects etc all spot on, can't wait for the blu-ray to come out.

It was a bit mental

Also how many times did the guy swear!
I've worked with people from SA before so I know they can be a bit blue but crikey!

LoL at all the people thinking his accent was bad

Depends what your job is.

Working on a factory and at a prison I was swearing every 10 seconds and I'm pretty sure if I was rounding up Aliens I might be swearing a bit more.
Where I work now I don't swear at all.
To be honest I didn't notice any swearing in the film so it must have been well placed.

was really disappointed with this film too, at first i was excited to see a new style of film i have never seen but the story was too predictable :( also didn't like how the usa soldier (iirc he was usa?) managed to survive for so long but be at the front of the battle all the time with everyone around him dying. i preferred 500 days of summer to this and 500 days of summer is not my thing at all. 3/10 i'd say. is that the lowest anyone given it in this thread? if not then 2/10 :)

Just watched this on a late viewing and have to say I was very impressed. Much better than most blockbuster movie type efforts with their cheesy crap.

Very immersive movie... no big movie star distractions with their predictable actions. CGI is spot on and they manage to get you caring about the characters, no mean feat when that includes CGI's who don't speak?

Not perfect but certainly one of the better movies I've seen and most certainly one of the best films released any time recently.

9/10

I finally watched this yesterday, 13.40 showing with just me on my own in a massive empty cinema for the win! :D

I thought it was superb, really really good, and I can't wait for the sequel to see what happens.

Is it really going to be out in 2.7 months? I thought in the film they laboured the point about Christopher coming back to help Wickus in 3 years?

Having lived and travelled with several South Africans I can say with great certainty that they sound exactly like South Africans.

Not to be argumentative, but I can assure you many sound very different. Johannesburg accents are more .... hard, like your lead character in the film (although I'll get to him in a bit). Then you get Durban which is more flexible and sexy (well, the women), Cape Town which is very much South African what you would expect. They all might sound the same to us where we all sound the same to them. We have more accents here in UK than they have over there, but there is still major differences to them and us.

And to comment on what another poster said, many here have never heard the accent before this movie and quite interesting with their 'authority' on the accent. Is Wikus your typical accent? I don't think so at all. It's either more accented for the benefit of the movie or the dude have many other influences in there due to living either abroad or different areas where he picked up 'habits'

Agree 100%

How can someone confuse a South African accent with an Irish accent?

Because in general people are idiots? Not to generalise, but it's mostly your typical **** from a small town that rarely moves further than a 5 mile radius from where he/she was born. They once did a quick trip over to France, Southhampton or Bath but didn't like the 'foreigners' or 'weird accents' and never went anywhere again. They also usually can tell between three different accents and anything they don't know is Irish :D

i actually thought it was some stupid usa actor trying to put a russia accent on lol, suprised south africans sound like wikus and also the black guys as there is a huge difference imo.

what about that stupid guy from the new star trek movie that is on the computer, is his accent supposed to be russian?
