This may be useful for some who have a 40GB PS3 that is out of warranty.

1 month after my PS3 went out of warranty the fan started to get really loud and unacceptable. I did quite a bit of digging around, looked at 3rd party external fans - all of which were pretty rubbish with little to no reports of success.

I then found an article on the internal fan - to cut costs Sony remove certain bits of the original PS3, including the introduction of a 15 blade fan. I sourced a replacement 19 blade fan from that auction site and it has brought the fans speed down considerably. Its not whisper quiet but acceptable. Cost was £26.49 for the fan and delivery plus about 15 minutes to install.

Hopefully this is useful to someone :)

I replaced the 15-blade in my old 60GB with a 19-blade and it made sod all difference... YMMV!

I've given up worrying about noise and learnt to live with it now :D

Ohh trust me, when the fan kicks in on the 40gb you'll know about it.

Thing sounds like a blooming hairdryer:)

you spent £27 on fan

I just sent my PS3 back to Sony because it was to loud.

My 40gig makes all sorts of horrible noises....

Then again its been on some crazy adventures over the last year and a half so i cant blame it... (ill be needing a new ps3 like my classic ps2 at somepoint...)

I had a 40gig that was whisper quiet... (for the first yr) then on some games it turned into a hoover.(especially EA). So i just sold it and bought a slim instead. Much quieter on load. Never really gets loud. I don't think the difference was any more than the equiv of £27. Actually probably less than that.
