Been reading about this TV series. I loved the Sopranos. I though Generation Kill (which I understand is by the same people) was okay. Is the box set worth a punt in the Xmas sales?

Well worth it. I think most of the season boxsets can be had for about £10-£15. It's a lot better than Generation Kill. Well written, believable characters, avoids most cop show clichés. It can be a little difficult to get into as the story isn't neatly wrapped up at the end of each episode but once you get into it you'll spend entire days binging on it.

Last year I watched the first 4 episodes and gave up, I thought it was really boring. I might try it again though as everyone says it's the greatest thing evaarrrrrr

Season 1 is £20 in the shops in town today - £14 online. I'll get it ordered next week then. Cheers

I think its essential television.

Last year I watched the first 4 episodes and gave up, I thought it was really boring.

I always tell people to give it 5 episodes and you won't regret it. It's not your average CSI junk, everything wrapped up and solved in 45minutes. It builds and goes deeper all the way.

To the people who says its boring and 95% talk then I suggest you stick with 24 or stuff like that as you'll probably never appreciate the genius involved in writing, creating and performing TV like The Wire. It is for the more discerning viewer

It is 95% talk.
Exactly! 95% talk does not equate to 'boring' :)

I've watched The Wire all the way through four times, and am currently watching again with a mate who's never seen it before. It's still compelling viewing; even now I see things that I'd never picked up on before.

It's on a different level to pretty much anything out there; I recently watched Prison Break, seeing as it's often recommended around here, and it was intolerable. The suspension of disbelief required for regular episodic programmes becomes untenable once you've seen The Wire.

As a measure of how great it is, consider this: fans of other series have a rough maximum of ten characters to choose as their favourites. In The Wire, there must be at least thirty. Why? Because there's no black-or-white division of heroes and villains; cops, gangsters and supporting characters will have some side of their personality that you can respect, admire or both.

A must-purchase if you're a fan of intelligent - or should that be non-patronising - television, if you'll pardon my brash tweedy impertinence ;)

For a lot of people it does. That would explain the god awful quality of most television shows.
If this were a thread of a broader topic, I'd contend that. Well, most of it - I won't argue that most modern television shows are pretty embarrassing for the species. People like talking, they like hearing others talk, it's what 95% of their day consists of.

However, this is a chance for all us Wire fans to wax lyrical about one of the finest television programmes ever made, and I think we're both singing from the same carol book, so I won't go any further :)

Very good if you like that sort of think, I liked it but did get a bit bored at times. you need to get into it, it isn't an action movie or special effects fest.
