Thoughts on the Freelander 2?

Looking to change the missus car, she currently has a little Mini Cooper and whilst it’s a great little car and bags of fun to drive it is still a little car and we now need something more practical with more space.
Other than all the usual jobs (shopping, getting the family around) we also want to be able to stick our dogs in the back when taking them out for a walk etc. My car has a big boot and a fair bit of space but not keen on letting the dogs lose in it. :p

I personally would be more keen on something larger like a quad-cab pickup or large SUV along the lines of a Porsche Cayenne but the wife thinks they would be too big for her and that’s fair enough seeing as she will be driving it 80% of the time.

She also likes the X3 but I just can’t bring myself to like them so at the moment a Freelander 2 seems like an okay comprise. So any thoughts/advice/recommendations around these?

Also open to other suggestions and budget will probably be around £15K (obviously anything cheaper is a bonus!).

Thanks :)

My wife was worried about the size of the Discovery before she got it. Actually, because the visibility is so good she doesn't worry about it at all.

I suppose no major need for an SUV but the missus isn't over keen on estates and at the end of the day she will be giving up a car she really likes for this so not fair to get her something she isn't made about.

Regarding the size comments I also think she would have no problem adapting (drives my car without problem) but the roads round here aren't huge and for popping from A to B something slightly smaller may be more helpful. I'd love a disco 3 but for the newer shape they are coming on over budget.

Freelander 2 for £15k? They're only a couple of years old aren't they?

A pickup is always going to be a bit agricultural inside compared to a Disco or Freelander 2 so even if size wasn't a issue she'd probably not like them.

I have no experience with the Freelander 2, but they seem to be popular with Horse owners alongside the L200s, Navaras and older Range Rovers etc you usually see.

Used Jeep Patriot start from <£10K. Cheap interiors and not so good rear visibilty though. The diesel is a VW unit.

is this new shape or old shape freelander ?

the old shape freelanders werent particularly safe at all. Nor particularly reliable either i seem to recall.

My dad picked up a 2008 Freelander 2 around a year ago. A 2008 XS with Winter Pack an 19"s

We've been very impressed with it. Fuel economy is roughly what it is supposed to be (37). We went on a landrover experience day recently (can get these for free if you express an interest) and it was very impressive what they can do off road and very comfortable on motorway journeys. Not as big as you'd imagine. Driven plenty of freelander 1's which are so poor compared to the 2.

Would recommend it over an X3 and the competitors though it probably does use a bit more fuel.

To be honest I'm not overly fussed with fuel costs as between us we don't really do enough miles to make much of a difference at the end of the year. Depending on weather will hopefully get out this weekend to go few a few.

Decent car. Ideal for what you're after by the sounds og it. They should have dropped the freelander badge though as its such a different car, the old name brings it down. The interior feels quality and the drive is nice. I would have one over an X3 too. It doesn't look as masculine as an L200 or similar, but it is a hell of a lot more refined and it's safer too.

I've had one for the last year or so, TD4, so if you have any specific questions, fire away :)

I fancy a Freelander as replacement for the CRV. Mainly for the towing ability. Freelander will tow a caravan better than the CRV, plus some sites we've had the van on, 4x4 is a must to get the van onto a pitch. Granted an estate will give better mpg, but then to match the weight i'd be looking at A6/V70 estates.

Freelander 2's do look very nice but at least the Mk1 Freelander has a BMW diesel engine.

The TD4 new is a touch under £20k.

Brand new they start at £19K for the special edition white (black costs more), this goes on up through teh spec levels up to the top spec HSE which can set you back 30K.

Second hand they can be had from £12K.

Excellent vehicles. Nuff said :)
