As per yesterday, all OcUK staff have arrived safely to work. No accidents, no problems, no fuss and no big risks were taken. They just set off earlier. It just shows what can be done if you try.

This means that all your orders will be picked, packed and shipped.

Maybe the weather is worse in other parts of the UK but around OcUK HQ it's just the side roads that are icy. Fortunately none of our staff live in very remote areas.

I'd like to thank all OcUK staff for making an effort :)

Indeed... we had another 4 - 6 inches of snow here last night (Ipswich) and apart from one twiddle who has locked himself out of his car.. everyone is in again..

I made it clear to our lot that if anyone didn't get in then it would come out of their holiday. Hence we have 100% bums on seats and have done all week.

Motivation!

This is the thing that narks me off though. If someone genuinely can not get into work why should they have to sacrifice one of their holidays?!
It isn't their fault that they are snowed in.
I know a lot of people will milk this excuse, but for some people there just isn't any option at all to get into work, and forcing someone to use it as holiday is a joke in my opinion.

Same here. Why force people into risking an accident if they genuinely shouldn't be attempting to go to work?

They should be given the option of taking it as a holiday so they are paid, or taking unpaid leave if they genuinely can't make it in. The company cannot foot the cost for bad weather.

Congrats to all ofthe OcUK guys :)

Thankfully it's the same where I live. Main roads are fine pretty much, other streets and side roads etc are very icy.

First day was terrible, took me 30 mins to get the first 300m from my house and then I got stuck in the tailback from an accident. :(

We have had staff crash cars and be 2 minutes late in the following days, I have had to shovel my car out of the snow twice and have got stuck on a hill for 35 mins.

First day caught a few people out but the days after it has been business as usual just in a colder office. :p

You can't say we are not a dedicated bunch!

It takes me 60 minutes to drive 7 miles, 30 mins of that is me driving the first mile safely, I am not forced into risking an accident as it is perfectly safe if I keep my car to very low speeds (tickover) and take my time.

Getting into work is the employees responsibility, not the employers.

If I give someone a free day then how is that fair on other people who have come to work?

If you live in the country and have miles of snow to get through that's deeper than your car - that's an excuse.

Everything else can be prepared for (okay, you could prepare for the above with a defender, but there are limits :p)

Personally I knew I had rubbish tyres so parked it on a main road before the snow got bad and set the alarm clock half an hour earlier because the losers drive so slowly even on gritted roads.

You can't actually do it though. If they chose to take you to a tribunal about it they'd win. Most you can do is ask them nicely to take it as a holiday if they can't get in.

In practice, few contracts will state that employees who cannot get into work because of the weather will lose a day's pay. Employees have statutory protection against an unauthorised deduction being made from their wages without their consent and deducting pay could potentially be challenged as unlawful under these provisions (although the employer could argue that there was no entitlement to pay as no work was done.)
