Woken this morning quite alarmingly at 2am with the phone ringing! Thinking that a family member had been rushed into hospital or something serious I picked up the phone only to hear something along the lines of "This is a call from Ebay . If you are expecting a call please press 8."

At this point I hung up!

I have just moved into my own home last month, and I have a new phone number from BT, which isn't registered with ebay. So how did ebay get this number?

Hopefully I won't get another call from ebay tonight!

When you sign up to ebay as a seller. You have to enter a verification code thingy.

To get the code.. you can enter your Home phone number and ebay will call you.. and the computer voice lady gives it over the phone.

Sounds like someone put your number into ebay by accident :)

When someone rings me up at 2 in the morning it's usually a drunk mate.
A little bit of me goes, hmm, it's not that late and I could quite go for a late night beer, see what they're up to :D

If someone else did they'd get swiftly told where to go or just hung up on.

It clearly wasnt E-Bay..

Press 8 then get charged crazy amounts per minute while you listen to a pre recorded message.

It is eBay, sounds like someone is trying to mess with your account, I'd go and change your password and check that everything looks correct. They ask you to perform the phone validation loop when you try and change certain (important) details like your password after you have forgotten it (which could be a hacker trying to get into your account).

Could be, except that ebay shouldn't know my new number, i.e. they still have my address and phone number at parents house... In any case I've changed the password, relogged in and everything seems OK.
