Dell 2407 WFP - worth upgrading?

I am wanting to buy a PS3, and due to lack of space, I would have to run it through my trusty 2407 WFP. Now, the problem is that the DVI slot is already in use with my PC, and the component in is in use by my V+ box and I was planning on using the PS3's HDMI output and of course my monitor doesn't have one.

Is it worth spending the cash on getting a new 24" panel that can replace my current monitor? It seems a lot of money to me just for one HDMI slot, or are there other advantages (for example, I can get a normal Dell 24" panel for £170 ish with HDMI)? Would a new 24" panel give me anything better IQ wise? I know back in the day the 2407 was the "one to have" so I am left wondering what monitors of today have advantage wise.

If I was to get another, I am unsure what'd happen with my current monitor. I would be tempted to keep it as a second one to be fully honest

The 2407 is still a cracking monitor, you'd need to spend about £400 or more to get a better one.

Why not just get an automatic HDMI switchbox and connect it to the 2407 and your PC with a couple of DVI/HDMI cables. That would give you a some empty HDMI ports to play with.

I was in the same boat as you... I have just sold my 2407WFP on MM as I only used the DVI port and felt it was completely overkill for my needs.

So I have sold the 2407 for £215, and placed an order for the Dell ST2410 as its a good price, good screen and has all the ports I'll need (DVI, VGA and HDMI), plus I'll get about £60 in my pocket in the process.

Unbelievable, you sold arguably dells best ever 24" monitor to buy their absolute worst, cheapo 24" monitor.

I'd hardly call it their worst monitor... a few mates have it, and its perfectly fine. Colours are great in comparison to the 2407WFP. A lot stronger, more vibrant.

IMO a good call as I need some extra cash, plus the 2407 was overkill for me and I rarely used any of the features of it at all.

No doubt there are probably more who are thinking the same as you, but for me it was a good call due to my situation.

How much are switch boxes and will the add any lag or lose any quality compared to a direct connection?

I have two 2407WFP-HC's. I wouldn't swap them for the world. They're still awesome.

Maybe in another 5 years when things like LED backlit LCD's are more commonplace and affordable then I will consider upgrading!

Im not sure if I can help but Ive got a 2407WFP A04 connected to my PC (GTX280) and PS3 via a 3port HDMI switch. Just used the HDMI-DVI adapter on the GFX card and then HDMI cables to the switch and then a DVI-HDMI cable from switch to monitor...

The switch box is one of those Medion/Aldi ones and cost me £12 I think - so all in all with all the cables its probably cost £30 if that...

Works well together - finding it hard to make any reasons to get rid of the Dell - easily my best purchase Ive made in a decade. Please dont sell it if you only want to keep the same size - I want to get a 32" HDTV but decided only when this monitor dies...

ps3ud0

They start at about £10, going up to £25 or so for a good auto-sensing one. No added lag or change in quality, they're just fairly simple digital switches.

Cheers guys. Nice to know that the £450 or so that I spent a couple of years ago was worth it and still is. I'll probably buy a second one if I see one and get a switch.

Why is the 2407 considered so much better than what was released after?

I'm looking for a replacement for my 05 and hadn't considered a 2nd hand 07 until your statement.

Just because a monitor is newer doesn't mean it's better. Dell now produce a huge range of poor quality TN panels which are nowhere as good as the 2407's PVA panel. If you're using a 2405, a 2407wfp A04 would be a nice little upgrade for pennies.

I suppose it's down to marketing but it's a shame people are duped into "upgrading" from a really good monitor to a terrible one just because it's got HDMI.
