bought in 2007 and finally messed up, good job i got that pcworld pc performace guarantee thing. heres the thing tho, firstly mw2 is stuck in the thing, are they going to sort me out with a new game? secondly if they give me a slim it wouldnt be the same because it doesnt play ps2 games doesnt have 4 ports or memcard readers.

i have ps2 games so do you think they will take the ps2 game thing into consideration or will they just dismiss it and say slim or money back?

will take it in tomorrow

Won't give you a PS3 with backward compatibility for the PS2 thats for sure. Dunno if there would be compensation in that respect. They'll probably just say that since the slim is a newer model that that will make up for it.

but thats like one of the reasons i bought the 60gb, i could have like 100 ps2 games for all they know.

anyway one more thing, i have upgraded the ps3 hd to a 320gb, im going to put the 60gb back in tonight. was wondering when i get the new one, would i just have to put the 320 in and thats it saved games are all there on the new ps3?

You can't transfer HDDs from one PS3 to another and have the data remain intact, unfortunately.

so i hook my 320gb hd from dead ps3 to a pc copy files onto a usb stick then put usb stick in new ps3 and copy data over. will it be easy to find savegame files on the hd when hooked up to a pc?

To get the disc out try turning the unit off at the isolation switch on the back. Hold down the eject button. Turn the unit on with the switch and keep the eject button held until the ps3 powers up. When it's powered keep pressing eject - Hopefully it will spit the disc out. Worth a shot.

It's definitely worth trying to get a Slim and a PS2 off them as well lol. Can't see it happening but I went from a 60Gb to a Slim and don't regret it at all. I much much prefer the Slim and if you do really want to play the PS2 games then get a fat off the bay for next to nothing.

AFAIK the only way to get a PS3 with BC through warranty is with the "Continuous Play" service Sony used to offer.

Sadly, unless you're already in it, you won't be able to join.

No, the hdd is encrypted and keyed to that individual PS3. So unless you have a backup already you have lost the lot.

The only way to get that stuff back now would be to repair it yourself then do a backup to a usb device, but then more likely than not they will not accept the return because either a) it is working b) the void sticker will be broken.

well went into pc world and told them whats up, they tell me to ring some number, i said your man back in 07 told me if i get this pc performance cover and something goes wrong just bring it back and it gets replaced. he says only in the first 28 days, i says you sure it was like that back in 07 too, he says he's not sure. i didnt pursue it, so i rang the number, they said a courier will pick it up tuesday and its usually back to you by 5-7 days. he says we will first try to repair it if we cant we will replace it, so i says you will most likely replace it with a non 60gb model right, he says yeah so i say whats happening with my ps2 compatability? he says im not sure but we will cross that bridge if when we come to it...

tbh i hope it gets repaired because that way i dont have to start a fresh pc performance plan which will cost me current rate think its 5.99 a month im paying 2.99, also i get to keep my saved games if they repair it. one thing i will be doing is getting a dedicated 1gb usb pen drive that will sit perm in my ps3 saving game files frequently.

My PS3 'died' this morning - it displayed the start-up screen and then stayed there without loading the XMB. Nothing I did would change or move it. I eventually learnt of the three-beeps power button trick and that saved the day with a quick filesystem restore, having told me that the data on the HDD was corrupted and needed restoring.

Most terrifying ten minutes of my life. It's all fine and dandy now though. I do have to wonder - how many average Joe Publics have came across the same thing, genuinely thought the console was broken, trashed it and bought another one? I dread the thought...

Of note, it's my launch day PS3, all the way back from March 2007.
