The Great Big OCUK Blood Drive \o/

I used to give Blood, but stopped when I found out they sold it to Hospitals (£100+ per Unit?), not actually gave it free as you would think, they also made a very tidy profit selling it to Private Hospitals both here and abroad, although they may have been stopped from doing this now by the Govt..

Yes, it costs money to collect and store, but over £100 a units worth? Someone's making a lot of money out of the UK Blood Donors goodwill.

Last time I had blood taken was back in December during the pre-op for the laparoscopic cholecystectomy I was due to undergo the next week. I was okay at first, all they had to do was establish my blood group so that they could keep a few units on hand if I needed it during surgery, so they shouldn't need much if the likes of CSI are to be believed, right? Wrong. The last thing I remember is the nurse going for the 3rd vial from her pocket to fill with my blood, before I wake up on the floor, covered in my own blood. I passed out, fell off the examining table and snapped the needle in my arm, leaking my own brand of claret all over the place and myself. Fabulous. And to add insult to injury, I wet myself while I was out cold. :(

Since some of those same private hospitals charge the NHS to carry out NHS operations in some cases (to get waiting times down), it looks pretty fair to me? And it still looks like a petty excuse, given what a small proportion is sold.

I started giving blood new years eve, part of my new years resolution. Waiting for my next local appointment to crop up. O RH Negative, everyone loves me :)

Gave blood yesterday - seems somehow appropriate for Easter Sunday

Made a few glasses of wine at lunch interesting :D

Never given blood myself but had to have blood taken for tests a couple of times. It isn't normal for them to fail to get the needle in the vein 6 times is it? :o
