This is a speculative thread, I'm more than likely going to spend a bit of money doing up my TF (getting rid of paint scratches etc) rather than a lot of cash on a new car, however I'm just worrying that I'm massively missing out on a great opportunity to drive something more special.

I have thought long and hard about a Boxster, the shape that I like is well within budget, but I think I want a 911 really (too expensive).

Any suggestions that might sway my decision?

Thanks

Define 'Fun'

Shopping car thats a bit of a laugh?
Family saloon that can terrify the dogs in the boot?
Track weapon?

etc?

It would be my only car, so has to have seats and space for a couple of pints of milk. Otherwise very flexible! I suppose my idea is 2 seats and no roof, but the reason I'm asking is for different opinions. I think the obvious choice is something like a 3.2S boxster.

Did NOT know you could get a tuscan for this cash, this exactly why I started a thread here. Is this a ridiculous idea for the budget?

You know you want the TVR now!
I want a Sagaris for the USA but they are not legal there due to safety restrictions

I have a massive soft spot for the Tuscan, I'd love one for the looks alone. However, as it would be my only car I'm not sure if it's a bit too ridiculous. Difficult one though!

/looks for one with flip paint...

£15k buys a very good e46 M3.

I considered a Porsche 996, but the budget bought only a scabby/old C2 as opposed to a late, good condition M3. Seemed like you could go very, very wrong buying a £15k 911 too.

While the M3 is lovely, it doesn't give me the same feeling in my trousers as when a TVR Tuscan is mentioned.

If it were a toss up between an M3 and a boxster, I'd probably have the boxster. I'm not sure if that gives a bit more insight into what I want or not. Does the M3 offer better value in terms of running costs than some of the others mentioned in this thread? Perhaps something like a Z4 is more what I'd be after if it had to be a BMW.

Have to agree about the 996 though, I don't like the shape of the pre-facelift 3.4 much and I've heard that they can be a bit of a nightmare with engine repairs. Possibly best avoided when 15k only just buys one.

runing cost no matter? get a Tuscan... my choise would be s2k tho

Had previously thought that if my MG was out of action permanently I would switch to a S2000. However, with options like a Tuscan on the table, I think I should aim higher to tempt me away.

Next year I will hopefully be driving only at weekends as I'll be able to cycle or walk to work, so running costs aren't so much at the top of the agenda.

If you're willing to go a bit more hardcore, loads of Lotus Elise choice for £15k.

The Tuscan would worry me unless I had some contingency funds in place. Awesome cars, but be aware it wont be cheap to run!

If you can be bothered with the long warm up procedure you need to do every time you drive it, dodgy electrics (windows etc), poor fit of the rear window and t-bar and can stomach £2k a year running costs (in a good year) then you won't find anything with similar performance and looks for the money.

Sounds like the sort of chap who needs to get out there and drive a load of things. 15 grand gets you lots of nice metal.

S2000 + FI money if you fancy the 2 seater VTEC route. ;)

im not sure where to start with things to suggest.

Whats your diposable income like. ie is there any point us suggesting something like an e39 M5 thats going to want several grands worth of tyres, a grand or more in warranty, lots and lots of petrol every year plus expensive inspection II services @ £800 etc...

or are we thinking something more affordable ?

Not a lot of cars will offer the same 'special' feeling a TVR does but then not a lot of cars require the same time, effort & expense that a TVR does.

As we're talking sports cars you may wish to have a look at the Z4, Elise and MX5, all rear-wheel drive in an interesting shape. Regarding a £15k Boxster, do they not carry fairly expensive maintenance costs?

If I were in your shoes i'd be moving on from the TF, as enjoyable as you may find it its no where near as good as these other cars, and i'd go for either the Honda S2000 or the Lotus Elise.

Just how hardcore does the OP wish to be.
If he really wants seat of the pants, a Caterham would be interesting. Everything post that is just getting softer and heavier, but in rough order, would be something like an Elise/VX220, S2000, Boxster, SLK/Z3M.
