Most cost effective way to receive HD broadcasts?

My wife and I are facing a little bit of a dilemma. Currently, we don't watch a massive amount of TV (through the iPlayer only - Our 'net connection isn't quick enough to stream HD content sadly), and I doubt that that will change massively. Currently our house has no aerial, and no way to receive any digital broadcasts. The analogue transmitters in our area were switched off last year, and even then, we didn't have an aerial anyway. Previous to moving in, we didn't really watch an awful lot of TV either.

For the last six months, I've been considering Freesat HD (with the Foxsat PVR box being the likely candidate). Now that I have the money to actually invest, I've noticed that a handful of Freeview HD boxes have been just released. Having checked, we live in one of the few areas currently broadcasting FVHD. This is where the difficulty in decision making starts. I've no idea which to go for, and indeed which box. A PVR would be preferable, simply due to the flexibilty that the iPlayer has given us in watching when we feel like it. Sky is definitely NOT an option, as we really cannot justify a subscription service.

Because we have no infrastructure at the moment, whichever I choose is going to need cable running and something bolting to the roof, so this doesn't influence the decision.

Does either format have any glaring benefits over the other? Is the picture quality significantly better than the other? Is the picture quality of the SD content better on one or the other? Sound quality is also a big deciding factor too, whilst I appreciate that very little TV content is presented in 5.1, is either format capable of receiving DD etc? What are the likely future for either format, in terms of survival and range of channels?

Sorry for the barrage of questions, but 'telly' isn't really one of my fortes, being more of a games and music person :p

Many thanks in advance.

There are no freeview HD PVR's at present - the freeview HD box that is currently released 'may' be upgradeable with a external HD in the future but if you want to invest in something 'now' I wouldnt be getting something that 'may' be upgradable - there are questions about 'if' it would only be able to record standard def.

I think 'freesat HD' misses a few of the HD channels - no C4HD / E4HD but this is likely to be recified in the future when the sky licences are up for renewel. Overall 'freesat HD' is a more mature format and the hardware is cheaper and readily available. I don't have it at I dont have a dish on our block of flats in London :-( If it did I would, so not sure which is the best box. I do know you can get freesat boxes now with ethernet connections that allow the iplayer interface to work through the box which I immagine you would also like if you forget to record something!

I'm not sure about a PVR but the newest G20 panasonic plasmas have the ability to record to an external drive (as long as it's >160GB) which means you can record Freeview / Freesat HD as well as normal FV channels although I'm not sure if it can record series etc like external boxes / sky boxes for instance.

Not the most useful but something to keep in mind if you ever did go for a newer TV!

Extremely unlikely i'm afraid.

The problem is not the encryption it's that the Astra 2D UK beam is FULL (mostly with BBC regional variations) there is no way the copyright holders will approve a channel like C4HD in the clear to the whole of europe.

All of the decent free sat channels are on Astra 2D.

In the next 4 years or so, Astra are slated to launch more sat's, hopefully with one or two more UK dedicated beams.

This means C4 et al can move their channels to UK only beam and remove the encryption.

I believe on sat the only HD channels on Astra 28.2 which are in the clear are BBC HD, ITV HD and Luxe TV HD.

There are other HD channels available from other satellites, but requires moving the dish and the lifetime of these channels can be very short.

In summary, wait a little while and get a Freeview HD PVR as it'll give you a wider choice of channels in a quicker time frame.

I have freesat+ (Foxsat HDR) and i'm chuffed to bits with it.

We got rid of Sky+ because 95% of the channels we watched/recorded were available on freesat.

It works just the same way as Sky+ and will most likely be cheaper once you've owned your freesat box for a year or more (1 years viewing with the freesat box equates to approx £21 a month which is what I was paying $ky)
