Apple holding iPhone OS 4 event, April 8th!

they already have it nailed, market leader ?

looks a nice makeover.... still no live feeds / widgets, thats all thats missing really.

They aren't market leader.

Third if you count Nokia and Symbian.

I am most excited about folders n multitasking.
Really thought folders was such a good idea. I hate having pages n pages of apps. I always try n group games etc in a page so folders is wonderful.

That is pretty good, the main issue I have had when trying the iPhone was the dozens of apps in no particular order. A couple of folders makes far more sense, however you're heading towards a file manager...

So Mr Jobs is getting excited about being able to send more adverts to my phone is he ?

Thats my lot with this , *** off apple

Wow, abit harsh. This is for free apps *only*.

Free = advertising. It's how it works and how it always has worked.

You would be right to be annoyed if paid apps have adverts, but I doubt that will happen.

Makes me laugh. There are already ads all over the free apps, this makes it more user friendly, whilst obviously making apple a bit of money as they can control it. It's very annoying when I've accidently pressed an ad and then been booted out of an app, I'll certainly look forward to this.

Thats what makes me laugh most when I hear people complain.
Look at how some other companies treat software to hardware upgrades and Apple are a saint compared to windows mobile, and android, he'll look at how nokia drops support after a year, and for most of them when an update comes it usually to fix bugs. Nevermind adding newer os versions with obvious new features!

That's why I haven't moved from an N95 8GB yet. Ignoring other makes of phones... S60 5th Edition (sometimes randomly called Symbian^1) - the OS shipped on N97/5800/etc. - is being replaced by Symbian^3 later this year. Then that is soon being replaced with Symbian^4. As if Nokia is going to put Symbian^4 on a phone that shipped with Symbian^3!

Which leads into...

You're missing the point completely. Why should I be forced to upgrade when the device itself could I'm sure technically handle task-switching, MMS, etc but Apple just decide it can't for business/sales reasons?

Tell me how a phone with a camera & GPRS "can't support MMS"? Tell me how a phone with a more powerful processor & more memory than "can't support task-switching" when its rivals have proper multiple applications running simultaneously and have done for years?

The fact you seem quite happy for Apple to decide on your behalf when your phone is obsolete, in spite of technological capability, is a real shame. One day the 3G is perfectly capable, the next day it's a relic - and people seem happy to just swallow this "fact" whole.

I'm one for complaining about Apple on many, many issues. But you are, to be extremely polite, being a silly person.

YOU bought the iPhone, whatever model you bought, with whatever OS came with it when you bought it. YOU decided it met your needs at that time. Why are you expecting Apple to give you more for nothing? Just because there is now something better doesn't mean you should get something for free. Yes withholding MMS on the original iPhone was not due to technical limitations. But if you wanted MMS in the first place why were you dumb enough to buy an iPhone? Equally if you wanted multitasking why did you buy iPhone?

Sounds to me as though you bought a phone that didn't do what you wanted from it and are blaming Apple for your mistake. Weird.

Yeah to echo the above I think people see the phone as a constantly upgradable single piece of hardware so expect everything on the 1st gen.

I can appreciate the 3G not being able to hack mutlitasking because I did feel the 3G became laggy at times. No point making it run toss for the sake of old hardware supported.

At least each gen of iPhone has been given great updates from its stock bundle. Majority of mobiles on the market haven't had their systems updated at all yet people don't say anything about those devices.

To echo above.
You agreed with your purchase at the time. If thats for 18 months then you should look at it as everything on it now for 18 months and don't take upgrades in the software into consideration.

Will I be allowed to post the links to download the iPhone OS4.0 on here?

Don't want another warning from the Admin.

Whats the point? To install it you need to have your phone registered with a dev account. Those that have access to that also have access to downloading / installing it.

Because Apple is a company which exists to make money. Once you've bought your iPhone, Apple has NO obligation to add any new features to it whatsoever. How did things work before phones had upgradeable software? You bought a phone, you kept it for a while... if you wanted better features, you bought a new phone. Apple is never going to minimise the incentive for you to upgrade your iPhone. It needs money to research and develop new features in the first place, and it needs to make a profit.

You have to be realistic in your expectations. Like every other phone company, Apple's a multinational corporation, not a charity.

Yep, fine I can accept that. I know from experience that the whole JB experience tends to be rather varied from one phone to another for some silly reason.

Apple not supporting the 3G was always going to be down to the RAM rather than the processor and I was expecting this all along. Even with say Tweetie 2 and any other app loaded the free ram figure drops to about 10-12mb. Add in a third app and you're skating on thin ice. Again it varies on the apps a person uses but this is mainly why they didn't go with the 3G.

As Durzel said though, it wouldn't hurt Apple to tell the truth for once instead of treating everyone like imbeciles when we all know better.

Part of the problem is that there is no Swap memory. Gruber touches on it in his review of the iPad. Everything that running has to be in memory, with 128mb that just isn't feasible.

At the end of the day Apple aren't too bothered about the geeks. They target the mass markets. I just chose to hear "multi-tasking is not possible on the iPhone 3G" as "The usability of the phone would drop way to much for this to be a good idea".

After all, this is a 2 year old phone. Tech in the mobile arena has moved on loads since the iPhone 3G was released. To echo what others have said in my own little way: Should you be expect to be able to run Crysis on an old Ati 9800pro. I think not. Sure it would be possible but the experience would be awful.

It's not moving that fast for Apple, given the iPad not even released here yet has rather similar internals (~CPU/RAM/Graphics) to the 3GS by most accounts.

Does it strike anyone else as odd that iPad is probably going to be given a run for its money by the new iPhone? To borrow a funny term I read in the Motors forum, I fear the first-gen iPads are Poverty Spec.

I hope in OS 4 they include a feature so you can put a lock on certain applications like SMS and email, if you give your phone to someone so they can play about stops them from being nosey and having a sneaky look! Such a basic feature but knowing them they are probably saving for OS 5......

Yeah I really need this to keep the nosey misses outta my sms!!

Even if they just included anything you want in the restrictions would do!

I've got the OS4 installed on my iPhone as i am a Developer, and i must say, it is fantastic. Truly fantastic, the MTasking and Folders are great. Works fantastic, great UI.

I basically said this in the iPad thread. Its not coming to the fall and there is going to be a iPhone update in the mean time. Kind of makes the iPad look dated spec wise and OS wise come june. I want an iPad but I dont want to get burnt in sept when they pull out a shiny new one.

My 3g has defo seen better days and a new one is due I was seriously considering a desire but they have just kept a customer now if I'm honest. If O2 had it out faster, I'd have one now.

You guys have to remember that the 3G is missing things from OS3 let alone OS4 that it is perfectly capable of (video recording, battery status % etc).
