Can't get even a semi-decent deal on the Desire anywhere now :(

Only place is Mobile Phones Direct, but I don't think that includes a flexible booster, which I need. Ah well, guess I'll have to wait for O2 after all!

Your're semi-right. The flexible booster is used for the unlimited internet. This also means you get capped to about 360kbs BUT if you ring t-mobile and let them know you have the desire which requires an always on data connection they'll upgrade you to the web 'n' walk plus giving you full speed and allowing you to use your flexible booster for whatever you want. Hence, I'm now on 300 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited (3gb) web for £25 a month over 18 months with a free phone. For a first contract (no upgrade/retention deal) I don't think that's too bad.

Got my boxwave anti glare screen protector that i ordered a couple fo weeks back from USA...very good screen protector which makes the screen a bit more useable ie when scrolling as i find the screen without the protector a bit sticky ie fingers dont really glide over the surface.

It does give a slightly matte effect but doesnt really dull the screen as some people say it does....if anything it makes the screen a lot more easier to navigate around now.

Wont they want to charge me extra then though? How do you manage to get it free?

So hasn anyone here rooted their Desire yet??..im thinking of it but it seems a bit complicated??...reading the threads over at XDA it doesnt seem all that easy to do.

It isn't yet. This needs a Linux CD amongst other things

Best hope is another kernel exploit is found soon

Ahh yes i read about that ie the Linux thing...i hope they find an easier way of doing it as i dont use Linux myself.

If not i suppose i could always sell my Desire and get the Nexus1...but dont really want to do that.

As far as I can tell the main benefit of Rooting is Apps2SD (correct me if I'm wrong) which apparently is going to be enabled by the release of Froyo anyway.

I can't really see the point in potentially bricking your phone for the sake of a few weeks wait.

Yeh id rather wait for the new update 2.2...just hope it isnt delayed for too long.

For now you're correct, eventually people will pull apart the Desire ROM and streamline it, freeing up extra RAM and ROM, and possibly upgrading the Desire to 2.2 before HTC do it officially.

But until that day comes rooting is a bit pointless, especially given how complex the process seems

doesn't need a linux cd anymore if you're using windows, still needs a goldcard tho.

as I mentioned in my previous post last night(prob couble pages back by now), I'm tempted to try it but don't want to risk bricking my desire. don't currently have the desire insured(been meaning to ring up barclays to take off the touch hd off and put the desire on, wouldn't be covered for 21days from date of putting it on tho), so don't want to end up with a £400 brick(bought it from cpw on orange payg).

think I might just hold off for the time being, hopefully they'll be able to over come the current limitations on what the rooting allows/doesn't allow.

As mentioned in another thread, I've gone for O2 through Carphone Warhouse (OneStopPhoneShop). It's free phone with £30 / month 600 mins, unlimited texts 24 month contract plus unlimited web browsing plugin for £7.50. That seems a little pricey until you factor in that the first 13 months are half price. So it will work out just under £30 over the duration of the contract (£21-22 ignoring the web plugin).

It does mean I have to faff around with claiming rebates every few months but it's a lot cheaper than the official rates that O2 have publicised.

Scratch that. I got a message saying it was delayed and I decided I couldn't be bothered with the faff. Ordered a different contract with mobiles.co.uk. T mobile £25 a month, 18 month, 300 mins, 300 texts, unlimited internet, £70 phone. Ordered yesterday. Should be with me on Tuesday.

Struggling to decide if I should go Desire or hold out a little bit longer and see what the new iPhone looks like. I'm leaning towards waiting now.

Contract expires 6th June but can upgrade from 6th May (O2).

To be honest I do not think the next iphone will bring much more to the party, other than speed/ram/screen bump

I was tempted to wait, but as my reasons above, I am going to pick up a sim free Desire
