VAT is going up to 20% say government

So they can claim council tax benefit as they do now. It's not bad, it's fair. Unpopular, year sure. If you work you should pay something towards services, not just be made to pay for having a larger house.

the bigger your house is, the more you pay. this works under the impression that the larger your house is the more inhabitants it will have.

it makes just as much sense as 'everyone creates the same amount of work'

it's a bad system, we proved it in the 90s, do we really want it back? any PM backing anything like a 'poll tax' would be committing career suicide.

it penalises those on lower incomes by dint of the fact that they don't/can't do a skilled job.
Playing devil's advocate here: What has your income got to do with how many council provided services you use?

An impression is not the same as reality though is it? The reality is an adult on average use X amount of services and should make a contribution if they work. If its scaled based on income then fine, all the better.

Council tax is not calculated based on the size of your house, but on it's value. As a result, my council tax is the same for my small one bedroomed flat as my parents pay for their three bed detached house. Even with the single person discount, I still pay more than I would do in a fairer system like the poll tax.

because not everyone is equal and a poll tax suggests they are.
Irrelevant.

Rich and poor people use: police, fire, recycling, refuse collection and removal, schools, leisure centres, park and ride schemes, parks and open spaces, street cleaning, subsidising of public transport, tourism, museums, social housing grants, housing and council tax benefits, environmental health and food safety in pubs, restaurants and shops, planning services, support for voluntary groups, meals on wheels, facilities for young people, adapting homes for disabled people, play centres for children, cctv installation, sports facilities, issuing taxi licences, flood defences.... the same amount.

Arguably the poor use them more!

"Cheaper for you" does not mean "fairer for the nation".

You have a property of value 'x', you pay council tax 'y'. There isn't getting any fairer than that. :)

Without counting food which is obviously essential and fuel my bills - rent / council / tv license / gas / electric / water come to 600£, I get paid monthly £820 - Do people think £220 is enough for food for a month and fuel? that's not including any things like sky/internet which I cant afford *post from work* This is something else that will just make life for me much more miserable

you pay your council tax based on the value of the property in 1991, if you live in a nicer place you pay more, seems fair to me.

What is fair about that? Do I get a better service from the council due to my flat being valued 'x'?

My property didn't exist until three years ago, and I don't see how nicer places get a better service from the council to be honest.

You get service from the council. There is no "VIP Service" just because your property is more valuable, and thus your contribution to council tax is higher.

It is fairer simply because you own a more valuable property. I.e. you can AFFORD a more valuable property.

which Labour created under control.
Not picking on you personally here but this is something I have picked up on as of late, the majority blame labour for the misfortune that this country has had in the last several years. Yet what they dont remember is what went on before this, conservative goverment selling off many many British companies to foreign countries, thus causing issues which labour had to cope with. I do agree that Labour could have done a better job, but take into consideration what the Greeks are going through, if it weren't for Gordon Brown we would be worse off then them.

I can just see a facturite regime coming back and destroying this country further, if however it doesn't then maybe, just maybe, we will benefit from this coalition goverment.

my two cents, even if in comparison to some I am a newbie to politics.
