Bogus Phone Call - "Online PC Help"

If I ever get a call, I'll do my public service and try and waste as much time of theirs as I can possibly manage. At least that way they're not scamming anyone else.

We've had a few calls from these guys this week, hopefully i will be at home next time they call and wind them up a bit. I particularly like pieater's spiel in post 22 :D

My mate rang me up on saturday saying "i've just had a weird call". Sure enough it was some foreign bloke telling him that his computer had a virus which was slowing his computer/connection down. He had said to me a few days previous that his connection was slow but after a bit of investigating I found it is exchange contention. Despite him not being great with pcs, he still saw through what they were claiming and just hung up on them.

This is both amusing and sad. I really want one of these calls just to mess with them, but it's awful that some people, especially elderly, are actually falling for it. I wanna know what they want you to do in the registry.

Log4rescue's website is such a joke. :P Direct quote of one the "testimonials" flashing on the front page:
"I am a business person and I cant tell my clients I'm a day behind becoz of a PC issue.thanks to log4rescue..they keep me looking perfessional."
Looking perfessional alright!

They did this to my parents house the other day - i answered and was like... Ummm no thank you goobye and put the phone down then litrally 5 seconds later he called me back and said 'DO NOT PUT THE PHONE DOWN YOUR COMPUTER IS IN SERIES DANGER'

I sniggered a little bit and let him carry on, he tried to get me to turn the computer on so he could 'show me' my computer problem...I just told him not to ring up again and hung up.

Have you guys not registered your phone numbers with the Telephone Preference Service? http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/

We did that years ago to stop double glazing sales people, it's still working, we only get the occasional call now and you just ask them if they've heard of the TPS, that shuts them up. There's a £5k fine if they abuse that.

Or, as I used to do when they start talking - and they won't stop - say "oh yes tell me more" leave the handset off the hook and walk away.

Andi.

This is fine for UK companies but means nothing for foreign ones like this (India).

Id love for these guys to call me. I have a Solaris VM instal just waiting for them to log into and fix with their leet MS skillz. Oh how I would chuckle. :)

i actually had them call me literally 5 mins after i had got off the phone with bt sorting out a problem with my hub. they even tried to say that they were taking over all hardware support for my laptop from bt. so i said "thats brilliant " as bt hadn't offered any hardware support for my laptop, and were only offering support for my broadband connection. as you can imagine my asian friend on the end of the phone got very excited at this. tho his enthusiasim waned slightly when i went on to tell him that my laptop was **** and slow as a two legged horse because it was bogged down with copious amounts off rather dodgy adult material, and that i wanted him to 'spec me' a new pc and tell me how i went about transferring all said pron to the new pc. his excited tone dissapeared completely when i asked how to remove the pron from my original laptop as i was concerned that i was going to be visited by the local constabulary and i couldn't have them siezing the laptop and seeing what was on it :p..................i got some half hearted reply that they didn't offer that kind of hardware support and he politely declined any further questions from me

bit of a result i thought :D

I would be far too tempted to toy with them.

"Can you turn your PC on sir?"
"Sure, let me just walk next door"
"Why are you going next door sir?"
"Well, you said it was a neighbourhood thing so I am being a model citizen and breaking in next door to use their computer! JUSTICE MUST BE FOUND!!!!"
