And at the end of the day, i'm all about functionality over form. I don't mind how something looks, I just prefer that it works. Having had some right hum-dingers of phones before, I just prefer it when stuff functions correctly. I'm not saying that Android doesn't work, i'm sure it does - but the iOS is fantastically stable.
Staying on my original point, I surely can't imagine that allowing users a little more freedom on how their phone looks and acts would cause that much instability. Some jailbroken iPhone lock/homescreens I've seen look great, just wish that Apple allowed this kind of freedom with their handset without having to jailbreak it and risk having it bricked.
I don't think "form over function" really applies to android vs iphone homescreens, adding widgets and alternate launchers does a hell of a lot more than just change the look. They change the whole way you interact with the phone, they allow much more information to be viewed much quicker and more easily.
Finally, I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think the main issue that gives Android users pause in buying/recommending an iPhone is that they cannot imagine going from a very free environment on their phone to a very locked down and preset environment. It's difficult to go from screens full of useful information, custom shortcuts & icons and immediate access to program features to a phone with screen full of preset icons.
I think the attitude of many on the forum is also influenced by the overload of tripe on the internet about iphones, some iphone fans completely disregard anything not iphone as if it is the greatest phone ever made, I mean look at this crap I stumbled upon today:
It’s no secret that Apple’s new smartphone, the iPhone 4, is a big deal. The Phone 4 has the capability to transform the world of modern smartphones in a way nobody has anticipated. iPhone 4, teamed up with iOS 4 have some unique features that could render cutting edge smartphones like the HTC Evo 4G and even unreleased phones in Dell’s lineup completely obsolete.
The iphone 4 making the evo
obsolete? Incremental improvements is going to change the mobile landscape? I had a laugh, but this is the same kind of attitude that's everywhere out there. So I think a lot of it is down to people being sick to death of hearing about the most fantastic phone ever and Steve "god" Jobs.
