Friends car is misfiring, garage say that the head has gone?

Basically he took it in for a watertank cos it was split, no misfiring, but when he brought it back it was misfiring, and there saying that the head gasket has gone. Its a 6yr ford KA
 
If the water tank had split and the car ran with no coolant it's probably fried the gasket warping the head.
 
My mate has taken it to a diff garage and they have changed the spark plugs and are running a emissions test, so just have to wait with fingers and toes crossed.

Doesnt even need to run with no coolant, the lack of pressure will cause the coolant to boil on contact with the cylinders and introduce air bubbles and hot spots inside the engine.
