Tough choice, split car decision

I'd put money on it that your Rover will probably cost bummer all to run for a good while now. And having driven a lot of mainstream cars too, I'd be keeping it :p

Good to hear some pro Rover advice that is useful to our current situation.

The only reason I'd pick the Micra is to save a few quid really. We can afford the Rover no problem just cost cutting on things like fuel would be nice, but not vitally necessary.

Question to you Rover416i, cam belt on a rover is it a costly job? That is the only thing I can think of that will need doing soon as it has literally just got to about 60,300 miles and I was always told they need doing at 60k.

I forgot to mention it has also had a new starter motor this year too! So many things on it have been done in the past 6-12 months.

From reading the thread I'm tempted not to bother with the Micra a little more now. Sure the few cost savings would be great but I'd be left with a new drivers car or at the opposite end a biddies car. Now, I know the Rover isn't exactly an icon of motoring prowess but it's more of an "adults" car. I like the space and the comfort and most of the "little" things too much to downgrade to the Micra.

I'd keep the Rover.

Although its a shame its not a turbo, as there would be no desicion to make then!

It may be old, creaky, and looking a bit early 90's but at least the old girl probably has some soul. Over a bland, generic, jap clone.

How about some pics of the two cars? Maybe the new Micra does actually look quite smart? Im struggling to visualise a Micra, its not the sort of car I can really ever remember!! (or would need or want to)

If saving money is the aim of the game, and the Micra is as reliable as I am told it is, I would man up and take it on the chin and run that for as cheap as possible. Everyone has to swallow their pride some time, I don't think many people on here would stand by the idea of refusing to be seen in a Micra if it was their only choice of vehicle.

I'd keep the Rover if it is generally in good shape. Whilst very reliable the older shape Micra is quite a cheap and nasty car on the inside.

I keep trying to justify getting rid of our '98 Polo for something different and use the "it is getting on so might become a money pit" excuse to try and justify it. In reality my '02 Octavia is a much bigger drain on our finances with repairs.

1.2 k11 micra that slow? they weigh next to nothing so I imagine it would at least keep up with traffic? It'll be a whole lot cheaper to run than the rover...cheap tax and 50 mpg...

If the car was being offered free (even a micra) it would be a no brainer for me, otherwise it does require a bit more consideration if his current car is proving reliable...

It's a Rover and its due a service... if money saving is the only issue its a no brainer if the Micra is in tip top shape.

The Micra is indeed in good shape from what I can see, I'd need to investigate further for the full bare bones though.

The Rover has had a lot fixed this year already and therefore will probably be reliable for the foreseeable future. *touches wood*

I think it boils down to the cost of the Micra after I have sold the Rover. If I get the Micra for free then I will more than likely take it and have that instead. If I have to pay more than I would like then I'll keep the Rover.

I'm not sure I see the point in the change, really. Whats wrong with the Rover?

The Micra might be a bit cheaper to run but so what, a tent would be cheaper to live in are you going to sell your house?

Is the Rover really better than a Micra in any way, let alone the way a house is better than a tent?

What? Of course it is, ignoring reliability the Rover is better than the Micra in almost every possible way! It has a far better specification, it is more comfortable, it has more space, it is quicker, etc?

The Micra S even has odd handles to open the windows, and IIRC no PAS?
